D.E.A.R. Day is Delightful!

The Sixth Annual D.E.A.R. Day at the State Capitol was the celebration site for 200 giggly Oklahoma City Public School Second Graders from Hawthorne, Linwood, Cleveland and Sequoyah schools. Over the last six years, the Oklahoma City Metro Literacy Coalition (OKCMLC) has served 19 OKCPS schools and Western Heights Elementary Schools.

The collaboration between the Oklahoma City Metro Literacy Coalition, Feed the Children, and the Oklahoma City Public Schools provided a delightful day for students, teachers, parents and legislators.  The OKCMLC provided the funds for buses and Feed the Children provided two of the three books for each child.  Deisy Escalera and the Community Relations staff structured the logistics for the day which also included a visit to the Oklahoma History Center.

Ten legislators read to the children from the book, The Wild Adventures of Oklahoma Joe’s Ten Gallon Hat by Dr. Hall Duncan. It's a fun look at the history of Oklahoma and its many treasures.

A BIG thanks to all our volunteers, and to the Senators and Representatives who took time out of their day to read to the students! It made a big impression. For more photos of D.E.A.R. Day 2015, visit our Facebook page.

Calling All Scrabblers:

Can you unscramble the following letters to make a word worth 365 points: R X O Y Q T I U?

The word is “ quixotry,” whose face-value letters are Q=10, U=1, I=1, X=8, 0=1, T=1, R=1, and Y=4, for a total of 27. In 2007, Michael Cresta took advantage of an already played R to use all seven of his tiles across two triple word score squares, earning 365 points, “ the most points ever on a single turn,” Jennifer Wood reported in Mental Floss magazine.

For you literati, “quixotry: means “marked by rash, lofty, romantic ideas or chivalrous actions doomed to fail,” and bears a close relationship to Cervantes’ idealistic hero Don Quixote.

The OKCMLC Scrabble Showdown is October 1! Get your “quixotic” self ready!

Our event does not require the mastery that Cresta seems to have. We have fun and good food and drink…a few prizes too. Hope to see you there!
