The Greener Abyss

Johanna Nilsson

A Swedish classic reborn in a thriller-like version

What is happiness? What is freedom? How shall we live our life? Would the road in the middle, the democratic society’s way, lead us right? Questions that are more important than ever. Karin Boye’s dystopian 1940 novel Kallocain is one of the classics of Swedish literature. In Boye’s novel the people has fled the collapsing totalitarian World State and built a new society in the Desert Town.  In Johanna Nilsson’s continuation we get a chance to see how they build the society of their dreams.

Words from the agent

In a way these seemingly different titles unite. One of the reasons for the interest in reading stories set in Sweden seems to be our society. It is fascinating to imagine that a country that has managed to stay out of war for so long, and which has had a stable and peaceful profile also has its problems. Maybe it is a bit of a relief to find that Sweden is just like other places, even in a society of democracy and wealth there are evil forces to handle.
One of these books describes the urge to create a paradise, while the other shares pictures and facts about the paradise we live in. To us Sweden is a paradise with all its faults and assets, and we love to see the tourists come here. So, equip yourself with a good guide and feel most welcome.
