Monthly briefing -

April 2015

Are you interested in being involved in research? The Clinical Research Network (CRN) has a small but increasing flow of research studies that can involve community pharmacies. Working closely with the RPS, the CRN is encouraging pharmacies to become Research Ready using an online self-accreditation tool.

CRN-Wessex aims to create a proactive group of ‘Research Ready’ pharmacies able to quickly take on research studies when they come onto the Clinical Research Network Portfolio. It provides financial remuneration to research active pharmacies for the time spent undertaking research activities for NIHR Portfolio studies. If you are interested in finding out more about the Research Ready Accreditation scheme contact Dr Sarah Clarke

Public Health Dorset – the future of community based health improvement commissioning

The supplier engagement events on 24th March at Merley House & 26th March at Dorford Centre followed the events in November 2014 and included information on how to register on the e-tendering website, which is currently the only way to ensure consideration for the provision of services in the future.

Public Health Dorset are committed to community based services, there are 141 community pharmacies, 95 GP practices and 2 weight management providers currently providing Public Health commissioned community services. Current contracts will roll over for 6 - 12 months and advance notice will be given to all approved providers that a service opportunity is about to be published

Christmas is coming!
Well, perhaps not yet but if you normally open on a Saturday and want to have Boxing Day as a day off, then you need to start planning now. PSNC have issued guidance about Saturday 26th December 2015:
•    Saturday 26th December 2015 is a standard working day - the Bank Holiday is on Monday 28th December 2015, so if a contractor is usually open on a Saturday they will be required to be open on Boxing Day.
•    To make changes to supplementary hours for that date a contractor is required to give NHS England Wessex 90 days’ written notice
•    To make changes to core hours a contractor will need to apply to NHS England Wessex and provide evidence of change in need.
The Dorset CCG Formulary is now readily accessible, and can also now be downloaded as an app.
Chapter 26 - Wound management products and elasticated garments - contains the PAN Dorset wound management formulary. Community Pharmacists are encouraged to become familiar with this so that they can inform prescribers when items are not listed on the formulary, and help to support adherence to the formulary by stocking items listed.
The formulary can be accessed via www.dorsetformulary.nhs.uk and the app
via www.dorsetformulary.nhs.uk/Mobile/default.asp
Check34 - a new tool to help with prescription analysis
A new online system to help community pharmacy contractors to analyse the prescription data they receive every month from the Pricing Authority is being launched by PSNC this month. A unique collaboration with the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) means all NPA members will gain access to Check34, without paying a separate subscription fee.
As well as enabling contractors to monitor their monthly prescription payments as notified on the monthly FP34 Schedule of Payment it will also provide the prescription data trend analysis which until now has only been available to larger companies with substantial IT resources.
Contractors who use Check34 will be able to view trends in a number of key performance indicators (KPIs) for their prescription business and look back at historical payment data. They will also be able to compare their individual performance against collated regional and national data.

to submit your results for the emergency supply audit. Community pharmacy contractors who participated in period 2 of the national emergency supply audit (contractors whose data collection period ended on Sunday 19th April 2015) are reminded of the need to submit their national audit results.
Pharmacy teams should collate their results and then submit these using NHS England’s online reporting system by Sunday 3rd May 2015.

Repeat Dispensing Workshops
Thursday 14th May 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm
Merley House, Wimborne, BH21 3AA

Repeat Dispensing has been shown to help patients get access to their medicines and if 80% of all items were dispensed in this way, 2.7 million GP practice hours would be freed up to deliver patient care. Across Wessex, many areas are not making the most of this service.
If you would like to learn more about the benefits of Repeat Dispensing, electronic or paper, register online for this event. The evening, aimed at GP Practice and Community Pharmacy teams, will start with a buffet supper at 7pm following which, presentations will help you to introduce this service to your patients. This will be followed by group work in localities to explore the position locally and determine future actions.  The Wessex Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) hopes you can join them for this event. Please note - registration for this event is online only. For further information, please contact:- Vicki Rowse
