Image PlaceholderWorld Press Freedom Day, 3 May, is when we commemorate and celebrate the pillars of free press, reminding all of us who have a stake in free media and free expression to commit to changing the current, dismal landscape of violence and intimidation targeting members of the media.

We need to do more to safeguard and protect journalists and make sure they are safe and free to report on any matter they want. Without that, free press is under siege.

The date of 3 May was set aside by the UN General Assembly in 1993 to foster free, independent, pluralistic media worldwide. It is a date where we mark and reaffirm our commitment to the never-ending struggle for free press and free expression.

World Press Freedom Day celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom. This year we focus on the grave threats facing journalists as they report on conflicts, and how the digital environment has made journalists more exposed and vulnerable than ever. Read More

Monitoring and responses by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media


The Representative monitors the safety of journalists, particularly in cases of physical attacks, incarceration and harassment. She responds quickly and directly with the participating States and other parties concerned through diplomatic channels and public statements. Learn More

Co-operation matters!


How can we work together to achieve peace and security? The #WeCooperate campaign launched by the OSCE aims to show that security is a joint effort. Be it an Instagram photo, tweet or a video uploaded directly to osce.org/wecooperate, support the campaign and show that co-operation matters!
OSCE Cafés bring OSCE officials together with people interested in security issues in an informal, social setting. They are a rare chance to sit down and converse face-to-face with the people doing the OSCE’s work. The event series kicked off in Vienna’s traditional Café Korb in July 2014 and is held in different cities in the OSCE region.
