This summer, it's all about youth!
23 stations are sharing more than $216,000 thanks to the Youth on Air! program
Ottawa – The CRFC is pleased to award more than $216,000 to 23 campus and community radio stations through the Youth on Air! pilot program. This program offers youth aged 16 to 30 a unique radio experience by means of training grants.
"This is a positive first experience - we have received some very interesting project proposals that will allow stations to enhance their local programming during the summer season in addition to putting forward the importance of youth in community media," says CRFC President, Roger Ouellette.
From a documentary tracing the sound portrait of the neighborhoods of Québec City to a program on environmental issues or a radio series on women in audio-related technical fields, these projects all have in common that they are at the heart of their local communities.
" CHLS-FM is very pleased to be able to run a summer internship project with generous assistance from the CRFC’s Youth on Air! program. It will enable us to expand our station’s capacity for production of high-quality locally produced pre-recorded programming and will help us to raise the station’s profile in the community generally, but especially with the youth. We want to encourage young people to see radio production as an attractive opportunity for them to exercise their imagination and creative skills," says Station Manager Jeff O’Kelly from Lillooet, British Columbia.
As for Lorinne Larouche from CKIA-FM in Québec City, receiving funding means that "the station will have a chance to offer a radio experience to young interns that will enhance their skills and help them integrate the community radio sector. They will be able to perfect the art of radio documentary and they will be offered various training including recording voices and sounds, and sound editing."
Since the CRFC first opened its doors in 2007, we have awarded more than $5 million to the campus and community radio sector in Canada. 115 stations have received funding for 313 initiatives. The CRFC would like to thank the private broadcasters for their mandatory and voluntary Canadian Content Development (CCD) contributions that have enabled all of these projects to take place.

Cet été, les jeunes volent la vedette à la radio!
23 stations se partagent 216 000 $ grâce au programme En ondes, les jeunes!
Ottawa – Le FCRC a le plaisir d’annoncer l’octroi de plus de 216 000 $ à 23 stations de radio communautaire et de campus dans le cadre de son programme pilote intitulé En ondes, les jeunes! Ce programme a comme objectif d’offrir une expérience radiophonique à des jeunes âgés entre 16 et 30 ans par le biais de bourses d’apprentissage.
« Il s’agit d’une première expérience très positive puisque nous avons reçu des propositions fort intéressantes qui permettront aux stations de bonifier leur programmation locale pendant la saison estivale en plus de mettre de l’avant l’importance de la jeunesse au sein du média communautaire », souligne le président du FCRC, M. Roger Ouellette.
D’un documentaire traçant le portrait sonore des quartiers d’une ville, en passant par une émission portant sur les problématiques environnementales ou encore une série de reportages sur la place occupée par les femmes dans des métiers non-traditionnels, les sujets traités ont tous en commun d’être au cœur des préoccupations des différentes communautés desservies par les radios communautaires et de campus.
« CKIA FM aura la chance de donner une expérience radiophonique à des jeunes de la relève qui viendra bonifier leurs compétences et ainsi les aider à intégrer le milieu de la radiophonie québécoise. Les participants au projet pourront se perfectionner dans l’art du documentaire radiophonique et ils se verront offrir diverses formations, dont la maîtrise de la prise de son ambiant, l'enregistrement de la voix et la réalisation du montage sonore », mentionne Lorinne Larouche, de la station CKIA FM, à Québec.
De son côté, Jeff O’Kelly de la station CHLS FM à Lillooet en Colombie-Britannique, souligne que « la station est heureuse de pouvoir offrir un stage d'été grâce à l'aide financière du FCRC. Cela nous permettra d'augmenter notre capacité à produire du contenu local préenregistré de grande qualité en plus d'augmenter notre visibilité au sein de la communauté, notamment auprès des jeunes. Nous voulons encourager les jeunes à voir la production radiophonique comme une opportunité intéressante leur permettant de mettre en valeur leur imagination et leur créativité ».
Depuis sa création en 2007, les fonds distribués par le FCRC ont permis de financer 115 stations pour la réalisation de 313 projets au coût de 5 millions de dollars. Le FCRC tient à remercier les radiodiffuseurs privés qui, par leurs contributions volontaires et obligatoires au titre du développement du contenu canadien (DCC), ont permis à tous ces projets de voir le jour.
