Have you heard the latest buzz? What is Physical Literacy?
Physical literacy is the development of movement skills that permit a child to move comfortably and confidently with control in a wide range of physical, rhythmic and sport situations. Dean Kriellaars, Exercise Physiologist at University of Manitoba is one of the leading experts in a movement called physical literacy.
"A child that has low physical literacy skills has low confidence to perform any activity," he says.
"They have a very limited number of movements they can do well. And all of those bundled together blocks them from participating in any physical activity."
The development of movement skills is connected to a child’s overall well being. The overriding message is that physical literacy isn’t just for sports. It’s part of a spectrum of essential life skills that children need to live complete, healthy lives.
Where do we fit in? PacificSport Okanagan provides age and stage appropriate programming for children, following the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) model of child development. We can provide training, education and delivery support for a variety of programs from Active Start (age 0-6), Fundamentals (6-9), Learn To Train (9-12) and Train to Train (12-16), either for the Leaders or Participants in your programs!
Feel free to contact us for more information on how we can support incorporating physical literacy into your specific activity programs!
