| The RoadWise Program is pleased to welcome Greg Hayes who joins the Program as the new Road Safety Advisor for the Kimberley region. |
|
Amongst other things, Greg recently worked for Woodside as a Senior Communications Advisor on the Browse project.
Members of the Kimberley community road safety network may remember Greg who brings his road safety knowledge and skills back to the RoadWise Program after serving the same role several years ago.

| Generating conversation about safe roads and roadsides in the community |
|
| Last month the RoadWise Road Safety Newsletter featured an article about the new Safe Roads and Roadsides Resource Kit. |
|
The Kit was developed to help Local Governments promote the safe roads and roadsides cornerstone of Towards Zero, WA’s road safety strategy 2008 - 2020.
The Safe Roads and Roadsides Resource Kit includes a suite of resources which can be customised by Local Governments, RoadWise or other road safety committees/groups. These resources can be used together as part of a whole campaign, or separately alongside other local road safety activities to engage with the community.
One example of an interactive activity included in the Kit is a ‘Spot the dangers’ exercise which asks participants to use whiteboard markers to circle potential ‘dangers’ on a road. What follows is an opportunity to discuss some of the safe system treatments which could be applied to improve the safety of this road.

| Stirling and Swan join forces with the RAC to host a free vehicle safety and child car restraint (CCR) checking station |
|
| The City of Stirling in partnership with the City of Swan and the RAC hosted a free vehicle safety and CCR fitting and checking station on Saturday, 11 April. |
|
The event was held in the car park of Supercheap Auto, on Erindale Road in Balcatta from 9.00am – 12.00pm. Supercheap Auto staff were on hand to cook up a free sausage sizzle and hand out drinks for those waiting to have their vehicle or child car restraint checked.
The station allowed motorists to have a free 38-point check done on their vehicles by a qualified mechanic prior to heading off for the ANZAC Day long weekend. Type I Child Car Restraint Fitters were there to provide free child car restraint fitting and checking for parents and carers.

| Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale displays dangers of driver distraction |
|
| The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale is warning staff and the community of the dangers of driving while distracted. |
|
It is estimated that driver distraction is a factor in 32% of deaths and serious injuries on WA roads.
The Shire has provided information to its staff on the effect that mobile phone use, including hands free, has on driving performance. The Shire has also set up a display and is using a quiz to raise awareness in the community.

| Drivers take a break at Wanneroo Driver Reviver |
|
| The City of Wanneroo RoadWise Working Group will set up their Driver Reviver caravan on Indian Ocean Drive, 1 kilometre north of the City of Wanneroo boundary, this Western Australia Day long weekend. |
|
The Western Australia Day Driver Reviver operation follows the group's Easter Monday activities.
Drivers travelling over the Easter weekend were encouraged to stop for a rest and revive with a coffee or tea and biscuits. A total of 198 visitors stopped to enjoy the refreshments and have a chat with the volunteers.

Driver Reviver is an important community initiative that aims to reduce fatigue related crashes by encouraging travellers to take regular breaks in their journey by visiting an operating site.
Driver Reviver sites run predominantly during peak periods such as Easter and Christmas holidays which is when traffic volumes and crashes are traditionally high. |

| 2014 preliminary road statistics now available |
|
| Last month, Road Safety Minister the Honourable Liza Harvey MLA released the 2014 Preliminary Fatal and Critical Injuries on WA Roads Summary. |
|

The document provides a brief snapshot of our State’s road trauma from last year, revealing speed and alcohol remain the top two contributing factors to fatal crashes.
Although Western Australia’s fatality rate has been decreasing significantly, it still remains higher than the national rate.

| Road safety audits can save lives |
|
| Did you know that a road designed in accordance with design guides, does not guarantee that it is risk free? |
|
The term ‘road safety audit’ is frequently used, but practitioners often underestimate the role such audits can play in achieving positive road safety outcomes - put simply, audits can save lives.
But what exactly is involved and how can their impact be maximised?
The ARRB Group's Road Safety Audit Awareness online series of webinars provides the answers.
Over six weekly sessions commencing on Thursday, 18 June (60-90 minutes each), ARRB's industry expert will take participant's through:
- the basic concepts of road safety auditing
- how to specify and scope an audit and considering the findings
- writing audit reports
- identify hazards and risks
- explore and discuss case studies from around the world.
All webinar sessions will be recorded and available for viewing at any time for those not available to log into the scheduled times. |

| Safe vehicles update: New ANCAP safety ratings |
|
| ANCAP has awarded the new generation Mitsubishi Triton a 5 star ANCAP safety rating. 5-star ratings have also been awarded to the BMW i3, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Renault Captur and Tesla Model S. The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and Mini Cooper have scored 4 stars. |

The first in a range of new light commercial vehicles (LCV) entering the Australasian market this year, the Mitsubishi Triton utility has risen to the top rating. This 5 star ANCAP safety rating applies to all Triton variants (all cab styles, engines and driven wheels).
"In terms of safety, LCVs continue to lag passenger vehicles with 57% of LCVs sold holding the maximum 5 star ANCAP safety rating. In comparison, 90% of new passenger vehicles sold are 5 star rated," said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Mr Nicholas Clarke.
"This 5 star rating for the high-selling Triton is a great achievement as this will translate to increased safety on worksites and on our roads," said Mr Clarke.
ANCAP is supported by all Australian and New Zealand motoring clubs, the Australian Government, the New Zealand Government, Australian state and territory governments, the Victorian Transport Accident Commission, NRMA Insurance and the FIA Foundation. |

| The impact of airbags and electronic stability control on Australian light vehicle fatalities |
|
| A new Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) info sheet is now available which presents estimates of the impact of airbags and electronic stability control (ESC) on fatalities in light vehicle crashes. |
|
It is estimated that frontal airbags have reduced light vehicle fatalities by 13 per cent, side airbags have reduced light vehicle fatalities by four per cent, and that ESC has reduced light vehicle fatalities by six per cent.
Together, these measures are estimated to have reduced light vehicle fatalities by 23 per cent. This may account for the equivalent of around half the reduction in the fatality rate, per kilometre travelled, since 2007. The impacts of side airbags and ESC will increase as newer vehicles filter through the fleet.
The BITRE provides economic analysis, research and statistics on infrastructure, transport and regional development issues to inform both Australian Government policy development and wider community understanding.
