DWDr: Where to Dance. When to Dance. Why to Dance.

The Potluck Mammas Dances - DWDr

Howdy FDFs,

Hooray for mommas! Without them you wouldn’t be dancing, because, well you wouldn’t be here!

Although I’m loathe to fall into the trap of created for florists and greeting card company holidays, you gotta’ admit that if they were going to craft one (as they did in 1905 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial in Grafton, West Virginia for her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis ‑‑ a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War [but also has the gall to name her own daughter after herself] – and embarked on a campaign to set aside a day to honor mothers [despite the whole name thing] as "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.") if anybody is deserving of a silly card and a bouquet of wildly overpriced pretty weeds it’s your mom. After all she did allow you to quite literally leech off her body for nine months only to exit in the most excruciatingly painful avenue possible, then not only forgave you for that transgression, but continued to clean, feed, house and be held virtually hostage by you and your siblings for a number of years afterwards and in a case of obvious Stockholm Syndrome, wonder why you don’t come home often enough after regaining her liberty when you finally left. And even though she’ll still try to embarrass you whenever there’s an opportunity to display your naked baby butt pictures to your rugby teammates, or remind you of the time you destroyed the antique vase inherited from her favorite aunt while engaging in training exercises to repel the invading Zontarean invasion forces (though truth be told, she should have accepted equal blame for because nobody in their right mind would ever place anything both valuable and fragile within reach of a six-year-old zonked out of his mind on Chocolate Coco Puffs!), she’s still the one who saved your life when your dad found out it was you who had attempted to create a new garage door when you mistook the gas pedal for the brakes on his Firebird, by commenting that he was too old for that silly car anyway, what the family really needed was a nice van or station wagon.

So hooray for mothers! But this year, instead of sending her those silly cards and wildly overpriced pretty weeds, why not take her dancing?  After all, before you and your little brother came along, she used to do a lot of that I’ll bet.

If you’re looking for someplace to take her and don’t have a lot of funds left over after dealing with PrettyFlowers.com and NiceCards.net, why not bring her out to the Santa Monica Third Street Promenade for a bit of free dancing. And you can even play her favorite song, just so long as it’s not that lethally effective earworm “Billy Don’t Be Hero” which has been banned from the Promenade for obvious reasons.  For more information about this Sunday’s dance click here, or scroll down to Sunday’s listings.

And to my own mom, thanks for the life; sorry for the strife; and wish I could dance with you on Sunday. Even if you can’t make our Mother’s Day Potluck Dance this Sunday, here are a few places for you to go dance with some other bad muthers from Saturday, May 9, through Sunday, May 31, 2015 and beyond (Remember to check the list for new additions as more calendars are now up to date.) And as always… Keep dreaming, keep dancing, and remember to check the website of venues for last-minute changes before driving down to Patagonia for a dance that’s not happening as previously scheduled when this list was compiled.

While we may not have found success with the Dance Downtown folks this year (and I just found out from a friend that they’ve also cancelled Tango this year so who knows what the heck they’re planning!), let’s keep working to build a base so that we can come back stronger next year. I have left our petition running in the hopes that next time we come back with more a thousand signatures. We’re more than a quarter of the way there. Remember, it’s only a problem if we have no solution. So if you’ve signed the petition, thanks and remember to pass it on to your swing, blues, westie dance loving friends. And if you haven’t, well you can fix that in about 35 seconds after clicking this link: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/232/028/168/getting-some-swing-and-blues-dances-at-las-dance-downtown-series/

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

If  you feel like taking a nice little drive up the coast, bBlues dancers favorite GARY ALLEGRETTO has a rare West Coast showing out in Malibu this evening at OLLIE’S DUCK & DIVE. I checked this out last month and it’s a bit of a haul (up near Zuma) but the venue is nice and airy and while there isn’t a large dance space, clever dancers can take advantage of the smooth floor. I say we should BLUESBOMB the place. If not, BYOP and you should have a great time. THE GARY ALLEGRETTO BAND goes on at 10 pm at OLLIE’S DUCK & DIVE - 29169 Heathercliff Road, Suite 102, Malibu, California 90265. See more info at: http://olliesduckanddive.com

That’s it thus far. But if you have anything for next week’s list (and please first check to make sure it’s not already listed [ya wouldn’t believe how often that happens!]) then send it along to me and I’ll try to get it in. Also, I’m looking for some new dance places, preferably live, but canned will do as well. It can be hotel lounges, dive bars, or brand new clubs where the music we love to move to is played and people won’t have to mortgage their grandparents just to visit for an evening’s frolic. So if you know of any and you want to see them added to this list, send them along.

Now, for the acronymically impaired, here's this week's glossary:
  • BYOP = Bring Yer Own Partner
  • DWDr = Darrell's Weekly Dance Report
  • PBDA = Pasadena Ballroom Dance Association
  • TSCoCM@LG = The Sweet Cacophony of Canned Music at LindyGroove
  • WIACAIG = Free (Which Is As Cheap As It Gets)
