Starting Clerkship or Residency?
Here is some moving advice!

As you get ready to move, looking at all the different moving van companies and different pick up/drop off locations can yield GREAT returns. Simply by picking up a moving truck at a different location can take off hundreds of dollars. Also, some moving companies are more prevalent in one area of the country or another, so do your homework. Also, don't be afraid to start packing a bit here and there. Items you don't use regularly can be quickly packed even a month in advance, and, as a rule of thumb, if you haven't used or worn something in over a year, get rid of it. If you don't have a lot of possessions to move, it can sometimes be a lot more profitable to sell everything and repurchase when you get to your new residence. Also, a little bit of preparation in the packing process can help a whole lot in the unpacking process. Ever been unpacking and needed something and so had to dig through every box to NOT find it? If you label each box with every item, or even create an excel sheet with items, it really can speed the unpacking up. It does take more time and organization in the beginning, but in the long run, it is really great! In an excel sheet you can even "search" for items. Talk about quick!
As 2nd years begin to transition into the clerkship/rotations of 3rd and 4th year, remember that this is their job. They may not be paid for it, but it is possibly even more important that they go above and beyond and spend the time at the office now then it will be later. Support them and remember to capitalize on the time they do have off. Ask lots of open ended questions so you can feel connected and so you can help your student to figure out what they truly love and which specialty would be the best fit for them!

APPLY FOR SPECIAL PROJECT MONEY
The AAOA Special Projects Fund is designed to provide financial support to AAOA and its affiliates to aid in the development of projects that support Osteopathic Medicine. Every year, groups across the country apply for monetary support of a project or projects, including individual Student Advocate Associations. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to fund one of your own local projects.
Visit the AAOA website here for the Special Projects application form and 2015-16 checklist. Please note that the deadline this year for submitting the application is June 1, 2015. The AAOA will provide a grant or matching funds up to $3,000. Proposals will be reviewed and then selected based on how well they match the mission of the AAOA.

A note from our National SAA Advisor/AAOA President Elect
Pam Kolinski
Pam Kolinski and Gary Novotny, AAOA Board Members, attended the AACOM/AODME (American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine/Association of Osteopathic Directors and Medical Educators) last month in Ft. Lauderdale to share the importance of having an active Advocates group in their schools and residency programs. In talking with many COM administrators, it has become apparent that there are still a lot of schools that don't know who/what the Advocates are or that we can offer their school a Student Advocate Association starter kit. We held a small raffle for a new FitBit and collected a good stack of about 50 business cards of medical school and residency program administrators, and we hope to reach out to them all for future opportunities. Any suggestions from the new COM SAA groups are welcome:
