BFG KO2

The new BFG KO2

There is always a danger when you touch a winning formula, so small wonder that BFG has taken years and years to bring out their new All Terrain Tyre, the KO2.

The original BFG AT's have gained iconic status, both for serious off-roaders, as well as those who want a mean look on their vehicle, but son't want to fit a set of Muds. And who can argue? With it's aggressive tread pattern and (extra) raised white lettering which you can spot from a mile away, the BFG's have been a runaway success.

Which brings us neatly to the new KO2: The good news, is that BFG has retained everything that made the KO stand out from the crowd. The better news is, they've improved on it:
  • The sidewall is 20 % stronger
  • The tread is even more aggressive (up to 12mm on certain sizes)
  • Advanced tyre footprint design, intended to extend tyre life
  • Side Biter Lugs: Protruding sidewall rubber blocks that provide increased mud, snow & rock traction, especially in aired-down driving situations
Yep, the new KO2 is certainly going to scare the socks off it's competitors.

The only draw-back, is that this tyre remains a premier brand, which comes with a premier price tag. But then again, how does one measure sexiness in mere Rands......?

In South Africa, BFG is keeping mum on the release date, but Team Mufasa Tyres has it on good evidence that it will start trickling into the country from July this year. As always, we'll keep you posted.

Leveraxe

Leveraxe - Making chopping wood a breeze

The Leveraxe has hit the world with a bang, and has become a runaway success. Team Mufasa Tyres takes a closer look at what makes this so different from a traditional axe:

The traditional axe is simply a heavy wedge that is swung at the wood. If it has enough momentum, it penetrates into the wood, spreads it and thus splits the wood.

In practice, everybody who has tried splitting wood with a traditional axe knows that it takes a lot of power to penetrate and split the wood.
In addition, the traditional axe is quite dangerous. While hitting with full force the head of the axe has a lot of kinetic energy and is hard to control. It is frequently possible to miss the wood entirely.

When using a traditional axe the work is quite slow. It happens quite often that the axe penetrates into the wood but does not have enough energy to split it. As a result, you have a log that has the axe stuck firmly inside it. Removing it can be quite challenging at times.

The other reason for the slow progress with the traditional axe is that actually a lot of time is used for lifting the split wood back onto the splitting block. With a traditional axe you are forced to always hit in the middle of the wood. Thus both split woods fall to the ground and you need to lift them up to continue splitting the first one and then the second one. It is quite laborious and straining for the back.

Leveraxe is based on a lever mechanism and rotational action
The operational principle of the Leveraxe is totally different from the traditional axe.

The axe head is attached to the handle from the side and not through the center. This results in the centre of the gravity of the axe head being to one side of the center line of strike.

The Leveraxe head is eccentric by design and thus the center of gravity is to one side of the handle and the line of strike. Upon hitting the top of the log and penetrating it slightly, the leading edge of the axe head begins to slow down. Where the axe blade widens sharply it stops the axe’s penetration.

However, the mass of the axe head still has kinetic energy and the off line center of gravity forces it to rotate eccentrically down towards the wood. This rotational movement causes the leading edge, or sharp edge of the blade to turn in a lever action, forcing a split with all the force of the kinetic energy of the axe multiplied by the leverage of the axehead.

Sanddrif

Sanddrif Holiday Resort

At Mufasa Tyres, we've always had a soft spot for the unkempt beauty of the Cederberg.

The Sanddrif Holiday resort is no exception:

After three hours’ relaxed driving, ±250 km from Cape Town International airport, you’ll find yourself in the heart of the Cederberg.  Tucked away on the lush banks of the Dwars River at the foot of the Wolfberg, lies Sanddrif, Cederberg Private Cellar’s holiday resort.

In the late 1950s, the Nieuwoudt family started renovating existing farm buildings for hikers and rock climbers looking for a place to overnight on arriving in the mountains the night before their expedition started – this was long before the days when hiking and rock climbing became popular.

Sanddrif is the ideal base for nature  lovers and the adventurous: trail hikers, mountain  bikers and rock climbers. It is accessible but retains an air of remoteness, which makes it the perfect break-away for city dwellers.

There’s a lot to do and enjoy: four well-known day hikes, bird watching, swimming, rock climbing, camping, mountain biking, a unique observatory and rock art. The less fit can enjoy the cool crystal-clear waters of the Maalgat pools only a 35 minute walk away, wander through the Valley of the Red Gods, watch the  sun set the mountains on fire and later admire the star-studded sky from around the campfire.

ACCOMMODATION AND AMENTIES

Sanddrif holiday resort offers a wide choice of accommodation, from more than 30 well-run camping facilities with a safe playground for children, to 16 cosy and  fully equipped self-catering chalets or cottages with breathtaking views of the famous Wolfberg Cracks.

The Dwarsrivier farm shop stocks basic requirements only. The friendly staff at the office will supply you with all the information, permits and keys you need to explore the area. Visitors are advised to book well in advance as the resort fills up rather quickly during weekends and school holidays.

Due to the strict Conservancy rules, only a certain number of day visitors and hikers is allowed.
