MOTHER'S DAY

AOL BUILD Interview with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell

Question: What do the Commissioner of the National Football League, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, CEO of Under Armour, and a center for the Chicago Bulls all share in common?

Answer: These incredible men -NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, General Martin Dempsey, Under Armour's Kevin Plank, and 7' Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah- opened up to me about their mothers for my upcoming book on mothers and sons.

I can't wait to keep working on this so I can share the dozens of interviews I have recorded with men from all walks of life, talking about their mothers.  What better way to celebrate Mother's Day this weekend than by giving you a sneak peak?

A Kitchen in the Middle of a Field?  A Rowdy Group of Vacationing Bankers All Focused on a Domestic Pursuit?  Successful Biscuits on a First Try?  Miracles Do Happen at the Academy!

With step-by-step instructions, I managed to corral a crowd in which each individual was holding a cocktail in one hand and a measuring cup in the other.  All this took place in a makeshift kitchen set on a tea field in the middle of the Charleston Tea Plantation.  The group's first-try biscuits rose to unimaginable flaky heights and the newest Academy graduates left for their Northern homes with biscuit-making under their belts.  As a bonus, they learned to prepare shrimp & grits using their own local bounty.  We added Charleston-made Andouille, shiitake mushrooms grown in Mepkin Abbey, and green onions plucked from the ground that morning to shrimp pulled from Charleston's waters only hours before the class.  And, of course, stoneground Geechie Boy grits.  It was certainly a departure from the bonding experience that usually involves a round of golf, but we were outdoors and had the pleasure of imbibing and consuming while doing.  Plus, everyone left with a brand-new skill!

TUCKAHOE WOMAN'S CLUB

Dean Manigault joined me for our last event together, a speech in front of the Tuckahoe Woman's Club, a remarkable group in Richmond, Virginia.  These ladies first hired the Deans to serve as keynote speakers three years ago.  The Tuckahoe ladies get our award for organization and the warmest welcome in the world.  The 400 members made us feel like we were J-Lo and Beyonce.  Who could have imagined that?

A tip for everyone everywhere:
What the Deans learned from our new best friends from Tuckahoe is to show your guests and business acquaintances -immediately- how thrilled you are to see them; the experience becomes phenomenal.  We would gladly hop in our cars and drive to Richmond to see the Tuckahoe ladies again and drink their fabulous homemade coffee punch on a moment's notice.

Our time with the Tuckahoe Woman's Club reminded me, once again, how much I love meeting wonderful people and sharing with larger groups what I usually am able to share in more intimate settings.  If you have a group - formal or informal - that might be interested in booking a future speaking engagement…

THE DRESS

As you have read above, I began the first week of May with as hectic a schedule as I can recall, but hectic in the most wonderful way possible.  On May 5, I taught that cooking class in Charleston.  Tuesday, May 6, was reserved for interviewing NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in New York.  I made my way back down South for the Wednesday morning speech in Richmond with Dean Manigault on May 7.  I decided to make it easy on myself by packing one pair of shoes and one dress.

This strategy made me think: Is there on dress appropriate for teaching a hands-on cooking class, interviewing the NFL commissioner (live) and giving a speech to hundreds of women?  YES, there is!  J. McLaughlin dresses do not wrinkle, look great on every body type, and can be thrown in the wash and hung to dry.  What's better than that?
While demonstrating the sautéing of shrimp & grits, my dress inevitably got splattered.
But after the plane ride to New York, a quick wash in the sink, and hanging to dry in the Big Apple, the dress was ready for its AOL TV debut the next day.
Thank you, J. McLaughlin!

Happy Mother's Day to mother's everywhere!
The common thread of mothers I know is their incredible power.

Especially to my daughter, Caroline (mother of two) and daughter-in-love, Logan (mother of three) with a new baby girl born on Tuesday, May 5.
