What's going on at WYPW...
A big thank you from all of us at WYPW
On Saturday 2nd May we here at West Yorkshire Print Workshop- for the first time ever- hosted a 'Print Day in May’, a day which is celebrated by printmakers and print studios all over the world! Our day went wonderfully… with open artist studios, print demonstrations, drop-in screenprinting and print fair, amongst other activities. We’d like to thank everyone involved as well as everyone that came along and joined in the fun! We look forward to our next one!
STILL NAVIGATING- Michelle Keegan                  11th April - 16th May
"Landscapes are the places and spaces from where
I begin.Sea.Beaches.Walls. Bare-bone structures of the land...
"

West Yorkshire Print Workshop is pleased to announce that our exhibition- titled ‘Still Navigating’- focuses on the multi-plate etchings of Nottingham-based artist Michelle Keegan. A Slade School of Art graduate, and winner of last year’s Flourish Award- for excellence in printmaking- Michelle is presenting her minimalist and monochromatic works in not just one, but two Yorkshire-based solo shows this year- at the WYPW gallery and at Huddersfield Art Gallery in the autumn.

The collection of works on display at West Yorkshire Print Workshop  serves to demonstrate a high level precision and skill in the medium of etching, and demonstrate an attuned understanding of abstraction.
Future Exhibitions
'Pressing Identities'

Pressing Identities will bring together the work of three contemporary artists exploring notions of belonging, displacement and personal cultural heritage through the medium of printmaking.

The exhibition will investigate the ways in which these artists express, celebrate and question the idiosyncrasies of their ethnic origins, having been born and brought up in India and Sri Lanka.

Artists-
'The Same But Different'

Jenny Thomas is a painter, printmaker and photographer, whose work is inspired by both urban and rural landscapes. She works from memory using a variety of relief printmaking techniques in combination, specialising in monoprint, linocut and woodcut.

The prints that will be presented in this exhibition are the fruit of over a year’s exploration of a technique whereby lino is etched with a caustic soda solution prior to relief printing. It is a very painterly technique.
Yorkshire Sculpture Park

HENRY MOORE: BACK TO A LAND

Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) presents major exhibition Henry Moore: Back to a Land, in collaboration with The Henry Moore Foundation. The exhibition takes a fresh approach to Moore's work by considering his profound relationship with land, which was fundamental to his practice and fuelled his visual vocabulary. A founding patron of YSP, Moore was committed to showing his work in the open air and in the rolling hills of YSP's former Deer Park in particular.

SCULPTING THE LINE: BRITISH SCULPTORS AS PRINTMAKERS

This exhibition explores the links between two forms of art-making; sculpture and print. Highlights include work by Modern British artists; Lynn Chadwick, Barbara Hepworth, Bernard Meadows, Henry Moore and Eduardo Paolozzi among others.

Throughout the 20th century sculptors have been drawn to the medium of print, often using printmaking processes to work on ideas which would eventually translate into sculpture, and to further refine and expand upon the forms and ideas that drive their sculptural work.

'Prints & Plates

Prints & Plates is an exhibition showcasing a diverse range of original work from contemporary printmakers. Alongside which, their plates, or information about the process used to make each piece, will be displayed.

These images are 'prints' as they have been made, for the most part, by using a press. Although we have for the first time included digital prints in this exhibition, as artists are increasingly using digital files instead of the traditional plates from which the art work is printed.

Notes from the technician...

We’ve got some new rag bins in the downstairs print rooms for ‘in-between’ rags – rags which are used but still useable. Please put any rags in these which still have some life left in them. These can then be used again for cleaning ink from glass, etc. This will help us to reduce the amount of rags we go through and keep costs down.
So it’s:

Red rag basket – clean rags
Black metal small rag bin – ‘in-between’ rags
Blue metal rag bin – used rags

Screen printers – PLEASE make sure when putting screens back in the racks that you put the mesh side in contact with the cardboard dividers. Screen mesh is VERY delicate and can tear easily. The cardboard is there to protect the screen mesh from snagging against the wooden dividers and ripping. Please treat screens with care! We will be shortly be getting some of our screens re-stretched, so it is even more important to make sure you treat them gently.
Thank you to all who came!
