May 29-31: River Teeth Nonfiction Conference at Ashland University

June 6: Deadline to submit travel, room, and board information for the summer residency

June 10?: Deadline for summer residency workshop packets

June 13 - 27: Paris MFA Residency led by Angie Estes

June 15: Deadline to register for summer residency.

**2015 Summer Residency Dates: Saturday, July 18 through Saturday, August 1**

2016 Paris Summer Residency dates will be June 11-25, 2016.

Summer Residency


The 2015 Ashland MFA Summer Residency Program will be Saturday, July 18 through Saturday, August 1.  Visiting writers include Lee Martin, Patricia Henley, and Patricia Smith.



Curious about the MFA program?
The summer residency is a great time to get an authentic, close-up look at our program and faculty. You can meet and speak with current students and faculty. All of our craft seminars and evening readings are free and open to the public. English students and instructors, alumni and friends, and any aspiring writers or lovers of the written word are all welcome to join us.

Check the MFA website residency pages for updates as we start to schedule our faculty readings, update presentation titles, and add new events.

Current Students
You should have already received information by email about submitting your workshop packets and other summer residency preparations. Please make sure you have submitted all of your travel, room, and board information by June 8.


Financial Aid Information


Students and prospective students may apply for aid at any time prior to the summer residency.  Visit http://www.ashland.edu/graduate/financial-aid to review steps to apply for financial aid.

A reminder to graduating students:  If you plan to request funding for summer 2015, you must submit a FAFSA and summer loan application.

River Teeth Conference in May

The River Teeth Nonfiction Conference on May 29 - 31 will feature guest presenters Cheryl Strayed and Jerald Walker along with several MFA faculty members and other nonfiction stars. We are not opening the sessions to the public, but the panels will be available on the River Teeth website following the conference.

Poetry Faculty

Steve has a new poem appearing in the online journal Blackbird, "Equal, Always Equal, to the Inexpressible."

Steve read recently at the "Mondays at Mahall's" poetry series in Lakewood, Ohio, and has two other upcoming readings.  He will be one of three featured readers for the May "Poetry in the Woods" series at the Shaker Heights Library Bertram Woods branch. Steve will read on May 27, 7 p.m. along with fellow writers Bill Arthrell and Tim Joyce. Steve will also be reading at the North American Review's 200th Anniversary conference in Cedar Falls, Iowa, June 11-13.
 

Celeste Ng

Fiction Faculty

Celeste continues a fast-paced book tour in support of Everything I Never Told You. The novel celebrated its paperback book launch on May 12 and was recently named as one of 12 semifinalists for the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award.  Celeste will have a few Ohio appearances in early June (Shaker Heights, Hudson and Cincinnati). Jill Christman

Nonfiction Faculty

Jill Christman’s e-book Borrowed Babies: Apprenticing for Motherhood (Shebooks, 2014) has just been released as an Audible book read by Angela Starling (runtime 59 minutes).  Jill's plug: "For half the price of a venti latte, let the smooth-voiced version of me read to you on your morning commute (spoiler: in this version, “Martone” rhymes with “macaroni”)."  Jill hopes to see some of you at this month’s River Teeth Nonfiction Conference with Cheryl Strayed and Jerald Walker. "I’ll be there nerding out on Jo Ann Beard’s “The Fourth State of Matter” (aka, the best essay ever) with the extraordinary Sarah M. Wells."

Kristin Distel

Class of 2014

Kristin Distel’s poem, “Still,” appeared in the most recent issue of The Broken Plate. Six of her poems (“Heritage,” “Salt,” “Candle,” “Evensong,” “Lost in the Graveyard,” and “Siate Immoratale”) were published in the eighth issue of The Stockholm Review of Literature.

 

Sarah Freligh

Class of 2013

Sarah Freligh's next book Sad Math is set for release in November 2015 from Moon City Press and can now be pre-ordered. Sad Math was the winner of the 2015 Moon City Poetry Prize.
 

Doug Rutledge

Class of 2013

Recently, Doug Rutledge's poem, "Noli me Tangere," was published by Borderlands: Texas Poetry Review. In addition his poem, "Speculate," was accepted by Common Ground Review and "Fish (Still Life)" will be published by Jabberwock Review.

Carolee Bennett

Carolee will be featured at "The First Wednesday" poetry series at Webster's Bookstore in State College, Penn. Carolee will read on June 3 at 7 p.m., followed by open mic time. Stop by if you're in the area!  More details.
 

Sarah Wells

In addition to coordinating the River Teeth Conference, continuing to co-edit the River Teeth "Beautiful Things" column, and her new managing editor position at Case-Western Reserve, Sarah is in the midst of a four-part series on the website "Off the Page." Already published are "The Desire to Be Desired" (May 13) and "What Good Guys Do" (May 20). Sarah will also be a presenter at the 2015 River Teeth conference on May 29-31.
 

N.I. Nicholson

N.I. will be serving as co-editor for the Spoon Knife Anthology from NeuroQueer Books (Autonomous Press) -- a collection on neurodivergence, disability, and queerness. N.I. continues to serve as co-editor for Barking Sycamores as well.
 

Elizabeth Wiley

Elizabeth was the 2nd place winner in the 2015 Ruminate magazine Vander Mey nonfiction contest. Her winning piece "If You Want It to Last..." will appear in Ruminate's Issue 35, available this June. Congratulations, Elizabeth!
