SWU offices across the state are closed today in honor of Memorial Day. We hope that you have a fun, safe day, and that you'll remember those in uniform who paid the ultimate price for the freedoms we enjoy.

Warriors visit Liberty Elementary

The SWU Baseball Team visited Liberty Elementary School in early May, where they assisted with a PASS pep rally, led by the Warrior mascot. Above left, a student gives a “high five” to the Warrior mascot during the rally. The players talked to LES students about attitude, effort and doing their best in their schoolwork. Participating were Julio Lara, Justin Brew, Davis Kippen, Dan Williams, John Garrett and Coach Mike Gillespie.

University Singers in Europe

University Singers have been touring Germany and Italy, reaching out to military personnel, part of Operation Freedom's Cadence. Pictured is Rev. Gail Kerstetter leading the singers in a rehearsal on their bus. Read about the impact they're having by clicking here for their blog

Wilderness First Responder 

Grant Wood performs first aid on Kaitlyn Dunagan's "injury" during the Wilderness First Responder course, which took place this past week at SWU in Central. Wood is a current student and Dunagan is a recent biology graduate. 

Staff Appreciation Breakfast

The SWU Staff Council and Pioneer provided a yummy breakfast May 20 for SWU employees on the Central campus. The council also gave out several door prizes during two breakfasts, taking place at 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. in the cafeteria.

Business Academy Series

SWU’s North Augusta learning center hosted a presentation May 20 by Alan Jones with Alive Media, Social Media and How it Affects Your Business, part of the Business Academy Series, presented with the North Augusta Chamber

SWU School of Education Nationally Accredited

Southern Wesleyan University’s School of Education recently received accreditation for seven years – until 2021 – under the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards. Read more>>

Congratulations!

Dr. Raul Chavez has assumed responsibilities as the new associate dean for the School of Business. He is also the program director for our graduate management and leadership degree.
Congratulations to SWU employees who received their degrees May 9: Emily Bloxdorf, admissions counselor, receiving her MBA; Nikki Hanson, payroll and benefits coordinator, receiving her MBA; and Terri Sales, records specialist, receiving her AA in general studies. 

Personnel News

Kierra Stockton has joined the AGS Student Services team (May 18) in North Augusta as student services coordinator. She just received her MSW from the University of South Carolina and her BS in family science and sociology from the University of Maryland. Prior to her appointment at SWU, she served in various community support and social work positions in the Augusta area.
 
Rhonda Woods returns to SWU as data specialist for the School of Education on June 15. Woods has over 18 years of higher education experience and previously served as a financial aid counselor and then assistant director of admissions at SWU (1997-2001) before accepting a position at Clemson University where she served as an academic advisor in the College of Business and Behavioral Science. She holds a BS in health, physical education and recreation from Lander University. Welcome back, Rhonda!
 
David Stubblefied joins SWU’s Division of Humanities this fall as assistant professor of English. Stubblefield briefly attended SWU in the ‘90s and went on to complete his BA and MA in philosophy at the University of South Carolina and is completing his dissertation in pursuit of his Ph.D. in English composition and rhetoric. He has several years of teaching experience at the college level, most recently at Clemson University.

Vacations

For 12-month employees, remember that your vacation leave should be used by June 30, the end of our employment/fiscal year. Please work with your supervisor to schedule this time off. Research shows that employees and the organizations they work for benefit when earned vacation time is taken.  We all have to recharge so that we can return to work refreshed and reenergized!

‘Lead like Jesus’ at SWU North Augusta

Lead Like Jesus will hold an Encounter/Training Session at SWU’s North Augusta learning center, 802 East Martintown Rd., Suite 101, May 29 and 30. Encounter is a one-day leadership development workshop based on the greatest leader of all time, Jesus. Unlike other leadership tools and programs, Encounter offers a unique perspective on how to become an effective and respected leader.
