Dear  Practitioner

Just a reminder for our upcoming Queenstown Obesity Eduventure and our Brisbane Lifestyle medicine workshops. Please find an interview with Professor David-Cameron Smith under the flyer below.

Interview with Professor David-Cameron Smith

How did you get into obesity management ?

Obesity presents one of the most fascinating and fundamental questions in human biology – why is extra body fat bad for health?  Its been 70 years since the first life insurance data linked fatness with mortality, followed shortly by the evidence that London bus drivers have earlier mortality than their more lithe and active conductors – but in the intervening period the consequential relationships between fatness (and inactivity) and ill health have been lost in translation.

More than ever and more urgently – the question remains – why is fatness (and inactivity) dangerous to health?  At least in part I hope to be able to drag people back into the dark recesses of their memories of human biochemistry and go far further than the Krebs Cycle ever went.

What have your learnt recently that has surprised you about obesity ?

Discoveries have come thick and fast, so have the complexity.  But the constant remains – there is a deep connectivity that links the inner workings of cells and the vital role metabolism (or dysmetabolism) exerts in human morbidity and mortality. This is biochemistry 2015 style and lipotoxicity rules.

Where do you see the levels of obesity heading in Australian and New Zealand over the next 10 years ?

I wouldn’t want to guess where obesity is headed – but as obesity and populating ageing are deeply interconnected (Question – when during a persons life are they at their fattest and why?) - and older population is a fatter population – even if the environment becomes no more obesogenic.  AND it will be come more obesogenic, cause damn it – I had to press my accelerator peddle this morning, turn the steering wheel and manually adjust the radio in my car.  Now that’s gotta stop – I want automation and I want it now

What do mistakes do you think practitioners make when dealing with obesity ? Where do we need to lift our game ?

Weight gain is so abundant - we’ve all lost sight of the sheer size of the health burden.

Do you get to Queenstown often. Any tips for our AMSN members to help them having a good stay ?

Talking about Obesogenic – Queenstown as the worlds best hamburgers (Ferg Burgers), which can be washed down with some exceptional Pinot Noir (anything from Central Otago).  But the running around the lake foreshore is better still. It is simply sensational with the view of the Remarkables dusted with snow.  And they are Remarkable

Thanks for your time David.

Our Managing Obesity workshop is shaping up to be the highlight for our 2015 CPD calender.  With this line up of speakers and the snow capped mountain location this will not be an event to miss. Obesity is becoming a major issues for both allied and general medical professionals and it's vital that you have the knowledge to deal with it effectively.

Our keynote for this event is Professor Boyd Swinburn.

Professor Swinburn would be considered one of, if not, the world’s leading academic on Obesity.

Boyd Swinburn is the Professor of Population Nutrition and Global Health at the University of Auckland and Alfred Deakin Professor and Director of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention at Deakin University in Melbourne. He trained as a specialist endocrinologist and has conducted research in metabolic, clinical and public health aspects of obesity. His major research interests are centred on community and policy actions to prevent childhood and adolescent obesity, and reduce, what he has coined, the ‘obesogenic’ food environment.

He is Co-Chair of the World Obesity/Policy & Prevention (formerly known as IOTF) and was President of the Australia and New Zealand Obesity Society (ANZOS) from 2005-7. He has also contributed to over 30 WHO consultations and reports on obesity, authored over 300 publications and given over 400 presentations.
