Top stories for May 2015:

New Chairman and Lead Members appointed at Craven District Council

At the Annual Meeting of Craven District Council on May 18, a new chairman, Councillor Robert Mason, was appointed.

Councillor Robert Mason takes over from Councillor Linda Brockbank who has served as chairman for the last year.

The Chairman of Craven District Council is the First Citizen of Craven and represents the Craven community at events throughout the district, in other parts of North Yorkshire and, occasionally, in the neighbouring areas of Lancashire and West Yorkshire.

The Chairman also raises money for a good cause - Cllr Mason has chosen two causes this year, cancer research and cardiac research.

Cllr Mason said: "I would like to thank Linda and her consort William for all the work they've done in the past year, flying the flag for Craven District Council.

Further details can be found on the Craven District Council website.

Is your community prepared?

Rural Action Yorkshire now has one grant remaining as part of their project helping communities in Craven and Bradford to prepare for all eventualities.

Grants are of £250 and can go to any group of volunteers in a village who wish to set up a new activity, buy supplies, or aid in the smooth running of their initiatives.

As part of this project, RAY seeks to enable communities to become more resilient to the challenges they face. This could be anything from bad weather, to natural disasters, through to reaching the most vulnerable and isolated members of your village.

You do not need to be a parish council or village hall to apply for these grants, merely a group of volunteers with plans to make their community an even greater place to live.

To apply, please email Martha Holmes, Project Co-ordinator, at martha.holmes@ruralyorkshire.org.uk or call 0845 313 0270 to enquire further or to express interest.

Skipton Town Hall and Craven Museum & Gallery are open!

The Town Hall reopened on May 1 with a performance of Handel’s Water Music by the new Orchestra- in-Residence, Skipton Camerata.

The Museum also opened on the same day and hundreds of people poured through the doors over the first Bank Holiday weekend, to examine the Magna Carta display and the main museum gallery which explores the history of Craven.

Workmen are still on site around the building and temporary toilets are in place while the rest of the work to the Town Hall is completed.

Skipton Camerata will be back at the Town Hall on Friday July 3 when they will perform Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Mozart’s Symphony No 40 in G minor, kicking off a weekend of celebration to mark Sheep Day in Skipton.

Building work progress to date
The current phase of works at the Town Hall will be fully complete within the next few weeks.

The areas that have been refurbished by the contractors have a fresh feel and can be seen in the new entrance foyer on the ground floor and the external zinc cladding.

The ground floor toilets and steps at the front of the building are the remaining elements to be completed.

Youth groups celebrate after braving the Dragons’ Den to claim vital funding

Youth groups are celebrating after being awarded funds for vital projects by Craven District Council’s Dragons’ Den.

The groups went before a fearsome panel in Belle Vue Square to argue their case for the cash – and emerged triumphant.

Bentham Youth Café, Team Ketchup, Rewind, GTS Sound, Ingleton Pool and Skipton Juniors FC were all successful in bidding for money for their projects.
