News from the Farm
May 2015
Welcome!
Open Farm Day in May was a bit soggy, but we worked around it and had a fun day with our visitors and the TV filming crew!
Alan the cameraman from KENW came out with his family and shot footage of Open Farm Day. He seemed to have a lot of fun!
The footage of shearing went well. It was funny. At the beginning, no one would speak, but after about an hour people forgot that the camera crew was there and chatter went back to normal. Various volunteers were interviewed and Orlando Ortega (the station manager who was also doing the interview) thinks they have some really good material.
It will be 3-4 weeks before the editing is done. I am not sure when the piece will air, but I will let you know when it does.
What a wild weather month of May! There were times this month we called the farm Lake Windrush! We had a tremendous rain the first week. In places the water was almost to the top of my Wellington boots ( or wellies to our British friends!) Then mid-month it became chilly, we had more rain, and the Junior boys became a little frisky! We have some video of them playing on our Facebook page.
We are not going to have Open Farm Days in July and August. If we decide to do something a little different, we’ll be sure to let you know.
Hope to see you June 13th for our last Open Farm Day of the summer!
Warmly,
Rosemary
Alpaca Shearing - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Shearing is still going on at the Farm! The wet weather in May prevented us from shearing as many as we would have liked (we can’t shear wet alpacas).
Come on out and have a different experience! Adult volunteers are welcome. Must be physically fit, willing to work and not afraid of getting dirty! We will provide you with lunch and drinks and the experience of a lifetime. Shearing days are very busy, we are working with very sharp electric shears and the alpacas are a little more stressed than usual so we, therefore, have to insist on no children or spectators.
The remaining dates we are shearing are as follows:
• Saturday May 30th and Sunday May 31st
• Saturday June 6th and Sunday June 7th
If you are interested in volunteering, please send a message and we will give you more details. Shearing days can be hard work but they are also a lot of fun.

Alpaca FAQs
What color is alpaca fiber? Believe it or not, they come in a rainbow of hues! Alpaca fiber comes in 16 -- yes sixteen! -- different tones that are recognized by the textile industry. White to light rose gray to dark fawn are some. Plus, that's in addition to the blends that can be made from combining those. This minimizes the need for pollution-intensive dying (bonus!)
