Assistant Edible Maintenance Gardener
Homestead Design Collective

Homestead Design Collective is looking for an Assistant Edible Maintenance Gardener. The position is part-time (1-2 days/week with the possibility of more days in the future) and pay is DOE.

Skills:

  • Working knowledge of growing organic vegetables and fruit in the Bay Area climate, succession planting, harvesting, soil prep, and organic pest control and fertilizers
  • Familiarity with in-ground and raised bed irrigation systems (drip and microspray) and commonly used irrigation system timers
  • "Can-do" attitude and willingness to pitch in wherever it is needed; we are a small but highly efficient company where we all wear many hats
  • Friendly and respectful attitude; you will be interacting with clients with a wide range of needs and knowledge of organic gardening
  • Basic writing and computer skills to write follow up emails to our clients

Experience & Requirements:

  • 2+ years organic farming and/or gardening experience, fine gardening experience a plus
  • CA drivers license and regular access to a working vehicle
  • Working cell phone (smart phone/iPhone a definite plus)
 

 

Farm Education Apprenticeships

Join us on our 12.5 acre organic urban farm for a 6 month Farm Education Apprenticeship. The Fairview Gardens Apprenticeship program provides a hands-on direct experience in farm education, community outreach, organic farming, and sustainable food systems.

Apprentice roles include:
  • Organizing and leading children’s programs
  • Designing engaging and creative cooking, crafting, and gardening activities
  • Curriculum development and write-ups for after school program
  • Educational material development for farm tours
  • Tending to children’s garden
  • Create educational signage
  • Marketing/flyering, and tabling at community events

Gain a variety of skills useful for teaching farm-based education, including developing age-appropriate activities, place-based curriculum, and engaging farm tours as well as participating in farm outreach events. Participants are also provided with opportunities to shadow parallel programs in our community. You also will work alongside our farming and marketing staff, engaging in all activities essential to the operation of an organic and public education farm.  

Yurt housing and stipend provided.

This position is located in the Division of Resources Management & Science, Anthropology Branch. This position is a Permanent, Career Seasonal. The incumbent has a full-time work schedule while in pay status, however the work-year is seasonal and less-than-full-time, therefore the incumbent is furloughed without pay from 2 weeks up to 6 months each year.

Duties: 

The incumbent will report directly to the Cultural Resources Program Manager in the Division of Resources Management and Science.  Primary responsibilities will include coordinating and managing  the park cultural anthropology and American Indian consultation programs; advising park management on natural resources, cultural resources, and places of cultural significance, and the contemporary people who value them; and conducting consultations and negotiations with park associated American Indian tribes and groups pursuant to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), American Indian Religious Freedom Act (AIRFA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), and their implementing regulations, as well as executive orders, departmental and agency policies and guidance.  The incumbent will also be responsible for designing, conducting and/or overseeing professional applied anthropology research; reviewing park projects and programs that may affect valued resources, recommending appropriate action or treatments; and developing and maintaining liaisons and effective working relations with American Indians and other park-associated groups and individuals, agencies, and the public

Qualifications Required:
 
To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
  • Have four years of appropriate experience in conducting anthropological research, including the use of ethnographic methods, or similar professional-level work.
  • Have successfully completed a four (4) year degree in cultural anthropology from an accredited university.
  • Have a combination of education and experience including courses equivalent to a major, or a combination of courses totaling at least 24 semester hours in cultural anthropology, or related course work, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Other Requirements: 
  • Probationary Period: If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Time-in-Grade: Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time-in-grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade  or equivalent in the Federal service).
  • Incidental Driving: You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
  • Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Work Schedule: You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Travel: You may be required to travel overnight away from home.
  • Government Charge Card: You will be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and purchase authority.
  • Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

Other Information:
  • Physical Demands: Field work may require physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; reoccurring bending, crouching, bending, stretching, reaching or similar activities; and reoccurring lifting and carrying moderately heavy to  heavy items. Documentary research and report writing is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time. Consultations require extensive driving throughout the Sierra Nevada to meet with tribal partners at tribal offices. 
  • Working Conditions: Work is performed both in an office setting and occasionally outdoors with moderate risks.
  • Housing information:  Government housing (some accessible to persons with disabilities) within the park MAY be available on a limited/bid basis, and assigned based on management needs.
  • Non-government housing may be available for rent in the local communities of Groveland, Mariposa, Midpines, Bootjack, Oakhurst, and Catheys Valley. El Portal is a small community bordering the west-side of Yosemite National Park and 15 miles west of Yosemite Valley.
  • Social Security Number: While submitting social security numbers is voluntary, applications that do not include the social security number cannot be considered.  Social Security Numbers are required in order to process applications and to identify records from those of other applicants who may have the same name.
