WHAT'S GROWIN' ON?

Recently, the four Supervisors of the Clerk's Historical Resources' sites went to the American Alliance of Museums National Conference in Atlanta. In the photo above are (L to R) Mandy Polson, Palmetto Historical Park; Amara Nash, Florida Maritime Museum; Phaedra Carter, Manatee Village Historical Park; and Yours Truly, Diane Ingram, Manatee County Agricultural Museum. The conference was chuck-full of workshops, speakers, and gatherings. Continuing education is important in all types of workplaces, including museums. Here at the Ag Museum, we hope to put some of what was learned into place!

You are invited to participate in UNHEARD STORIES! Family and business stories are important to our local heritage. We have many unheard stories here in Manatee County. The Historical Resources Department of the Clerk of Circuit Court needs your help to preserve this history. Do you have a Manatee County family member or friend who has interesting stories to tell about what our community was like and how it became what it is? Do you know someone who has been instrumental in the agricultural community for a long time? Are you familiar with a long-time business that has had a significant impact on our community? Assist in maintaining and celebrating this heritage by becoming a part of this effort. We are starting out by collecting agricultural stories and African American stories. For more information, please call Melissa at 721-2034 or Tori at 723-4991.

Curator's Corner

As the school programs come to a close, the summer allows us to focus on much needed projects around the museum. Thankfully we are not doing another huge renovation like last summer, but we are planning to reorganize our storage to make it more functional and continue updates in the Livestock Room. If you have been into the museum lately you may have noticed that the walls of the Livestock Room are remarkably blank. In the next few months I plan to finish a new exhibit about Cattle Brands which will fill up the wall above the brands in the floor. I'm also working on an exhibit about our dairy industry. I could use your help with two important things:
1. If you have photographs, small artifacts, and information about Manatee County dairies, it would all be appreciated.
2. We are planning a case to display cattle by-products and could use materials. Below you can click on a list of items that we need for the case. Please contact me if you can bring us any of these items. Thank you so much in advance!
