ASDA Community 106 Money Meeting
Kristi Larsen, part of the Insight team of Coventry City Council, has passed to us the following message:

An exciting opportunity for Cheylesmore and its residents, there is going to be a Participatory Budgeting Event held on July 18th  at Christ Church, this will enable local groups and residents from Cheylesmore to bid for funds from the remaining 106 Section (Asda) money.
We want to make sure that the community gets the maximum benefit by getting as many representatives from the community to help in planning the process. A planning meeting is going to be held on: Thursday, May 21st from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, at Cheylesmore Community Centre.
The planning session will cover areas such as agreeing the criteria for bid submissions - upper and lower limits, if groups can submit multiple bids, if there will be an age restriction on bidders, how successful projects will be monitored etc. All these details will be agreed by the Planning Group, that is why we want the Planning Group to be as inclusive as possible.
There have already been a couple of meetings but it’s not too late to get involved. If you want to find out more of the background and also more information on what is Participatory Budgeting then come along to the Community Centre from 5.30pm on May 21st and Susan Ritchie from Mutual Gain will be there to answer any questions in advance of the Planning Meeting at 6.30pm.
We want this event to be as successful as possible and this can only happen if we get as many representatives of the community involved. If you are able to attend please contact Kristi Larsen, Insight, Coventry City Council on 02476831282 or Kristi.larsen@coventry.gov.uk

Friargate - Junction 6 due to open on May 28th
From Sunday evening (17th May), the slip roads on and off the Ring road to Warwick Road (south) will be opened. There will be some changes to other roads in the area while road works continue. All of the new directions of travel will be clearly signposted. One of the final phases of work will see Grosvenor Road CLOSED to all traffic from 17th May for approximately 17 days, and diversion routes will be in place whilst deep drainage work is carried out in the area. The full opening of the whole junction is scheduled for Thursday 28th May 2015.

We were disappointed that the council did not listen to our views to keep the slip road from Warwick Road east-bound open. We always felt that an access tunnel for cars only could have been implemented. We are pleased though that the petition Hazel presented on behalf of residents did get some mature trees saved on Greyfriars Green, by creating a ‘slight bend’ in the new section of Warwick Road.

Request for Zebra Crossing on Daventry Road
A number of residents have raised with us their concerns of the crossing point on Daventry Road near the ASDA (Cheylesmore) store. The current crossing point is near the junction with Queen Isabels Road which in recent months has become very busy and dangerous to cross, residents are asking us could a Zebra crossing like the one in Quinton road be put in.

Regular readers will remember when ASDA (Cheylesmore) received its planning permission a condition was made for improvements to make it safer to cross Daventry Road to access the shopping Parade. See the paragraph below.

Planning Committee are recommended to grant planning permission subject to conditions and the signing of a legal agreement to provide a contribution towards community facilities in the area and £7,500 to pay for a pedestrian crossing to link the store to the existing parade of shops.

This work of tactile paving and a build out of the pavement has been done, but residents tell us it’s not enough to make it safe to cross. We have asked the Council’s Traffic management team to look into a zebra crossing being installed. We will keep you updated of their response.

Hazel’s Year as Lord Mayor about to end.
This Thursday, 21st May, will see the ceremony take place where Hazel and her son Christopher will hand over their chains to the incoming Lord Mayor Cllr Michael Hammon (Earlsdon Ward). She has had a memorable year attending over 500 events. She has welcomed many visitors to the City including Prince William to the Memorial Park and the crew of HMS Diamond to be freemen of the City, opened schools, shops, new businesses, and invited Cheylesmore, Whitley & Stonehouse Estate residents into the Council House for a “Tea & Tour”.

She would like to say a big thank you to all who have kindly donated money to the Lord Mayor’s Charities. The total raised is over £15,000 for her three chosen charities:- Grapevine, UHCW Breast Screening Unit and the Army Benevolent fund.

The Ceremony in Coventry Cathedral will be held Thursday 21st May at 10.45 am. Hazel does have some tickets for local residents on a first come basis. If you would like to attend please email her ASAP on Hazel.noonan@coventry.gov.uk

Hazel opens a new Credit Union outreach.
This week Hazel attended the launch of Cheylesmore Credit Union Outreach. This is part of Coventry & District Credit Union, working in partnership with volunteers from South Coventry Churches Together. It is now operating from the community hall attached to Quinton Park Baptist Church, from 10am until noon on Thursdays.

The City Council very much supports the development of credit unions in Coventry. Joining the Credit Union provides access to savings and loan facilities suited to those with limited finances. At present you have to be a member for several months before applying for a loan, though instant loans will be available shortly. Coventry & District Credit Union has its main base on Ball Hill, and more information can be found by clicking here

Gibbet Hill Road/Kenilworth Road.
The new traffic island at Kenilworth Road and Gibbet hill junction has re-opened following a weekend of resurfacing. It appears to be working very well and the traffic appears to flow steadily through the junction.

Toll Bar End Island improvement works
The A45 at Toll Bar End was closed last night and will be closed again tonight (Sunday 17th May) between 8pm and 6am for the installation of bridge beams. Diversions will be in place.

And Finally…. More Friargate Pictures
The landscape around the Friargate development is now seeing some big changes. For a video of the area click here

That is all for this week.

Best wishes,

Glenn, Hazel and Roger
