May 2015

Our founding Beekeeper is a woman.  She received a hive from her brother. who drove it  cross county to her.  She gradually began to tend the hive and took up beekeeping. Neighbors loved her honey and saw how it was helping them so they kept asking for more.  She wanted to share this wonderful product with more folks and the rest is Winter Park Honey history.
The end of May is when we head off to Winter Park, Colorado for the summer.  We pack up bees, boxes, dogs, and cats and head off cross- country. On our way, we collect pollen from everywhere we stop.  This is for use in our Local Wildflower Honey infused with pollen ( patent pending process).  We will keep you informed of all that is happening in our Florida and Colorado apiaries as we help our bees make the finest honey possible for you to enjoy!

Colorado here we come!

Bee Spicey!

There are two foods that have a bite to them in taste and also are very healthy. They are Ginger and Capsicum (peppers) and have been used as a natural remedy for many ailments for centuries. Now, science is catching up and researchers around the world are finding that they work wonders in the treatment of everything from cancer to migraines.  Here are some of the health benefits of each of these powerful foods.

Ginger

Cancer Prevention
A study at the University of Minnesota found that ginger may slow the growth of colorectal cancer cells. Other types of cancer cells seem to be susceptible to ginger as well.

Chemotherapy associated Nausea
Ginger helps with the nausea that can accompany chemotherapy. In fact it was an oncologist who initially requested that Winter Park Honey make a ginger honey

Morning Sickness
A review of several studies has concluded that ginger is just as effective as vitamin B6 in the treatment of morning sickness.

Motion Sickness Remedy
Ginger has been shown to be an effective remedy for the nausea associated with motion sickness.

Reduces Pain and Inflammation
One study showed that ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and is a powerful natural painkiller.

Heartburn Relief
Ginger has long been used as a natural heartburn remedy. It is most often taken in the form of tea for this purpose.

Cold and Flu Prevention and Treatment
Ginger has long been used as a natural treatment for colds and the flu. Many people also find ginger to be helpful in the case of stomach flu or food poisoning, which is not surprising given the positive effects ginger has upon the digestive tract.

Migraine Relief
Research has shown that ginger may provide migraine relief due to its ability to stop prostaglandins from causing pain and inflammation in blood vessels.

Menstrual Cramp Relief
In Chinese medicine, ginger tea with brown sugar is used in the treatment of menstrual cramps.

Prevention of Diabetic Neuropathy
A study done on diabetic rats found that those rats given ginger had a reduced incidence of diabetic neuropathy (kidney damage).

Capsicum

Capsicum benefits include improving circulation, inhibiting inflammation, preventing stomach ulcers, relieving congestion and boosting immunity as well. It is used not only for its medicinal and healing properties, but for its strong spicy taste as well.

Capsicum is great for metabolism. It helps lower triglycerides in the fat deposits in blood corpuscles. This not only burns extra calories, but also energizes the metabolism. Triglycerides are the fats which are stored in the blood corpuscles.  An increase in metabolism helps in burning of calories

Antioxidant properties. These antioxidants combat the free radicals in the body and treat cardiac diseases, cataract, bronchial asthma, and osteoarthritis. The antioxidants prevents the damage that can be rendered on the body by free radicals, namely, cellular damage and damage to blood vessels and nerves .

Capsicum has cancer-preventing properties which has been shown in studies.  The same compound, capsaicin, is believed to prevent cancer. This compound prevents carcinogens from mixing with the DNA.

Capsicum can aid digestion by increasing stomach secretions. It is also known for its laxative qualities.

Pain Relief. The capsaicin which is contained in capsicum is found to block the transmission of the pain signal from the skin to the spinal cord. This is helpful in controlling the symptoms of neuralgia.

Capsicum benefits include improving circulation, inhibiting inflammation, preventing stomach ulcers, relieving congestion and boosting immunity as well.  It is used not only for its medicinal and healing properties, but for its strong, spicy taste as well.

..."Nobody around here had ever seen a lady beekeeper till her. She liked to tell everybody that women made the best beekeepers, 'cause they have a special ability built into them to love creatures that sting. It comes from years of loving children and husbands."

Sue Monk Kidd, The Secret Life of Bees

Bee Stings

1. Not all bees can sting!  Male bees cannot. In any event, bees generally are not out to get anyone!  They will only usually sting if they are provoked or feel threatened. Bees are generally non-aggressive, except the Africanized honey bee which can be very aggressive.

2.  Last year there were only 54 deaths attributable to bee stings – from a population of 281 million people.  Bees rarely hurt anyone!

3. So why are fatalities from stings by bees so rare?  Well, unless a person has a bee sting allergy, the average person can safely tolerate 10 stings per pound of body weight!  The average adult can withstand more than 1000 stings, although 500 stings could kill a child. (Source: The Merck Manual of Diagnosis & Therapy).

4. A bee stinger contains different toxins - or bee venom - from that of a wasp. So, a person who has an allergy to wasp stings may not suffer from a bee sting allergy!

5. Honey Bees can sting predators such as other insects repeatedly. However, worker honey bees have barbed stingers, causing it to get lodged in the skin of mammals (including humans). This is fatal to the honey bee when they are eviscerated trying to pull away from the victim, and the bee will die soon after the stinging incident.

6. Queen honey bees are able to sting repeatedly, but queens don't't venture out of hives except to mate, and would be more likely to use their stings against rival queens.

7. Onions, toothpaste and lemons are all believed to relieve stings!

8.Swarms of honey bees are not usually aggressive unless provoked or feeling threatened.  Of course, if you're a beekeeper, your chances of being stung are obviously increased!

9. Bumblebees and solitary bees are usually very docile, and stinging is rare. How many times did you fall over as a kid, bump your head, cut yourself, get hit in a play ground squabble – I bet it was more often than you were stung by a bee.

10. Few people have an allergy to stings from bees, but if they do and are aware of it, they may carry with them an ‘Epipen’ with which to treat the sting.  Beekeepers carry the pens even though they might have been stung before many times. They could develop an allergy to the stings.
