Winemaker's Note

Shaw Vineyard Receives Four Editor's Choice Awards from Wine Enthusiast Magazine

Greetings from Shaw Vineyard! I want to share some timely news before the summer starts.

We are proud to announce that Wine Enthusiast Magazine has selected four of its wines as Editors’ Choices based on their quality, value, and critical scores. A fifth wine was also scored highly in the upcoming issue of the well-respected wine publication.

Wine Enthusiast is one of the preeminent magazines in the wine industry and their staff has always been very open-minded about my style and methods. It’s an honor to receive so many Editors’ Choice designations in one issue.

The Shaw Vineyard selections for the July issue of Wine Enthusiast Magazine are as follows:

2012 Riesling, Road Block Reserve
Score: 92           Editors’ Choice

2009 Pinot Noir, Reserve
Score: 92           Editors’ Choice

2007 Merlot, Reserve
Score: 91           Editors’ Choice

2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, Reserve
Score: 90           Editors’ Choice

2013 Gewürztraminer, Vin Rustique
Score: 90

I am excited that the editors at Wine Enthusiast looked as favorably upon my reds as they did my white wines. I have always believed that taking some risks in the vineyard and adopting very gentle grape processing methods, plus cellar aging for extended periods, can result in some great red wines in the Finger Lakes.

We hope to see some of you on Memorial Day weekend. Starting in June, we’ll be open 7 days a week. As always, we have a number of great wines ready for you to taste this season. See you soon!

Quick Update: Orange Wines at Shaw

For those looking for something completely different, Shaw Vineyard recently produced a series of orange wines. What is an orange wine, you ask? Orange wines are white wines made much like a red, with extended skin contact, and the oxidation and tannins give the resulting wine an orange hue. This style of wine is somewhat popular in Eastern Europe but is very rare in the United States. Orange wines are difficult to describe but they possess certain qualities of both white and red wines.

Stop into the tasting room to try some orange wine this season and let us know what you think. The 2013 vintage has two varieties: a Sauvignon Blanc called Vin d’Orange and an unfiltered Gewürztraminer called Vin Rustique (which received a 90 score from Wine Enthusiast). This has been a fun experiment and one that Shaw Vineyard hopes to continue in future vintages.
