Celebration of Life
"Military Service, and the Alternatives"
Rev. David Carl Olson
11 a.m. in the Sanctuary
The Unitarian Universalist Association has a history that includes the creation of major peace associations and the service of 3 UUs as Secretary of Defense since the consolidation of our traditions in 1961. In the past decade, the corps of Unitarian Universalist military chaplains has grown significantly. On Memorial Day weekend, our minister reflects on the contradictions many feel between our stance for peace and our military service.

Memorial Day Service
11 a.m. with
Dr. Michael S. Franch
Take an hour on this holiday weekend to think about the meaning of our recent wars. There will be music, some poetry, and brief remarks by Affiliate Minister Dr. Michael Franch on the meaning of the day, but the heart of the service is the reading of the names of those men and women from Maryland and Delaware who have died in Afghanistan and Iraq since 2002, when these wars began. Participants are invited to read some of these names from a list which also contains a photograph of the person. The service is over by 12:00.

Hoot! Hoot!
We’re looking for a few more OWL facilitators! Are you interested?
Our Whole Lives (OWL) is a tremendously important and exciting program offered to middle and high schoolers at First Unitarian. This comprehensive sexuality education program is considered the gold standard for the country. Not only is it great for participants, but it’s transformative for the facilitators as well. We’d like to have a Senior OWL (10-12 grade) group beginning in January. We have the kids; we just need the facilitators. If you’re interested, please contact Laura Laing at llaing@comcast.net for details. Training is required, and there are four options relatively near-by. We are especially in need of male facilitators. Training starts in July, so contact Laura soon for details.

Tour of 19th Century Unitarian gravesites in Green Mount Cemetery
On May 23, 2015, at 11 a.m., Catherine Evans will lead a walking tour of the 19th century Unitarians (ministers and layity) buried at Green Mount Cemetery, including Enoch Pratt, Rev. George Washington Burnap and Rev. Charles Richmond Weld, among others. Other Baltimore notables are also included on the tour. Back by popular demand, this tour was first offered in the fall of 2013. The tour last approximately 1 1/2 - 2 hours.
Please contact Catherine at catherine@firstunitarian.net if you plan to attend. This is important, so that we know whom to contact, in case there is a need to reschedule due to inclement weather. It also helps to know how many folks to prepare handouts for. However, last minute attendees are always welcome!
Enter the main entrance of Green Mount Cemetery at 1601 Greenmount Avenue (opposite Oliver Street) and park. We will gather inside the gate before we set out on the walk.

Online Pledging and Paying
Many people pay their pledges with automatic payments, either monthly or weekly or as they can. This is an easy and efficient way to do it! If you are now an electronic payer, please remember that we still need a pledge from you for the coming year. If we manage your payments, we will make any necessary adjustments starting with your July donation. If you manage your own payments, please remember to update your information if your pledge has changed.
The Giving Tab at the top of the church website has options for both pledging and paying. Lost your pledge form (or hate paper?), you can pledge online even if you do not plan to pay electronically.
If you have any questions about our electronic options, please contact me at mariannefr@aol.com or call the church office and leave a message.
Thank you!
Marianne Freedman
Assistant Treasurer

From the Social Action Clearinghouse
Spring is here and it is time to buy your Fair Trade Chocolate from the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC), our denomination's service organization. The chocolate is delicious and is made from cacao only from small farmer co-ops. Fair trade chocolate makes a great Graduation gift. Please stop by the UUSC table during coffee hour to learn more about how you can become a member of UUSC. If you are already a member, please stop by and check your status so your membership does not lapse. An updated list will be published after the membership drive ends on June 30, 2015. Membership is a way to live our UU values in our country and in the world.
