Recapping the Spring Season

2015 is off to a great start with 7 successful Fresh Check Days completing our Spring season. The weather gave us some trouble, but that didn't squash our spirits and certainly didn't stand in the way of our schools making a widespread impact on their campuses!

Here are some highlights....

Providence College | 4-17
Now boasts the title of being our very first "out-of-state" campus to host Fresh Check Day, capping off a week of events for their Mental Health Awareness Week. Highlights: outdoor event despite a bit of rain and heavy winds, a celebration when the sun peeked out, great student volunteer support (many of whom were high school friends of Jordan Porco!), a "therapy bear" (OK, it was really a dog, but who could tell the difference?!), tons of additional creative signage, awesome booth messaging, and a spotlight yoga session in the middle of the green!

Providence College created this AMAZING and INSPIRING "100 Reasons" video as a tool to promote Fresh Check Day! It's worth the watch!

Norwalk Community College | 4-22
Despite being a small school, NCC brought in BIG numbers! Highlights: Who knew campus coordinator, Lisa Slade, was such a gifted MC?! She knew how to work the room! Several student performances that gathered an audience, and amazing collaboration with community partners who ran strong interactive booths - they even had depression screenings. And we can't forget to mention that the Dean of Students came out to help RUN the Nine out of Ten booth!

University of Bridgeport | 4-29
Could not have asked for better weather and more enthusiasm from staff and students alike. Highlights: one of the best Know Your Limit booths we've seen run by campus security, tons of community agencies, a real parade float with the UB Knight, the UB therapy dog who had her own school ID (!), and not one, but TWO free-standing hand sanitizer dispensers which knocked the flip flops off of Program Manager Leah!

Tunxis Community College | 5-5
Pairing up with Spring Fling made Fresh Check Day the place to be, complete with inflatable games and obstacle courses, a rock wall, fried dough, and more! Highlights: a team of Registration Rockstars, strong student groups and community partners with impeccable booth messaging, great volunteers from beginning to end, and a yoga flash mob to kick it all off!

Southern CT State University | 4-20
Their 2nd Fresh Check Day in a row to move indoors due to rain but they still manage to draw a crowd! Highlights: Really unique booth activities like spin art, creating self-care kits, a body positive scale and a trash can for insecurities!

At Southern Connecticut State University, JPF Program Manager, Leah Nelson, participated in the "Trash your Insecurities" activity. What's Leah's insecurity? Watch and find out!

Western CT State University | 4-21
Sunny skies made for a beautiful Fresh Check Day! Highlights: A delicious grilled cheese truck, live band performances, a HUGE interactive mural, the football team came out to run the Know Your Limit booth, and there were tons of athletic games keeping folks entertained and engaged all afternoon. It was the place to be!

University of Connecticut | 4-25
This was UConn's 3rd year hosting Fresh Check Day and they pulled out all the stops! Highlights: BABY COWS (need we say more?), a jumbo ball pit, a superhero/recess theme, sunrise yoga, Dairy Bar ice cream, and tons of counseling center staff out on a Saturday to show students they are supported! And Program Coordinator Liz's dog, Zoe, posed as a therapy dog for the day along with the VP of Student Affairs's dog - Goldens and Labs, oh my!

Take a seat. Make a friend! UConn constructed their own ball pit and modeled an activity after a popular "getting to know you" SoulPancake video. Connection is Prevention! Check us out!

Tunxis Community College held a Yoga Flash Mob on their campus to kick-off and promote Fresh Check Day!
