Weekly E-News of the Eastern Shore District of The United Methodist Church
  Issue: Thursday, May 21, 2015
If we pray together, I believe great things will happen in our churches. We truly need faith in prayer. We need to trust in our Lord who answers our prayers. On May 24th you may use the prayer in the UM Hymnal #574 or the prayer in our Book of Worship #501. Or you can write a prayer for your worship service. Please remember the Virginia Conference Day of Prayer and let us pour out our hearts and minds to our God. This is truly a time to pray.  -Bishop Young Jin Cho

UMCOR responds to US tornado damage

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) issued an emergency grant to the Arkansas Annual (regional) Conference yesterday, after an EF-2 tornado tore through the small town of Nashville, Arkansas, on Mother’s Day, killing two, injuring eight, and causing widespread damage.

“There is more damage in Arkansas than anticipated,” said Greg Forrester, UMCOR executive in charge of U.S. disaster response. Forrester has been in contact since the storm with the conference disaster co-coordinators Byron and Janice Mann.

The twister that impacted Nashville was one of 26 tornado sightings on May 10 from Texas to South Dakota. Van, a small town in Texas about 100 miles from Dallas, also was severely affected. About 30 percent of structures there suffered damage, and some were completely destroyed. Early response teams from both the Texas and North Texas annual conferences are officially on the ground to aid those in need.

UMCOR also approved an emergency grant to Rio Texas Annual Conference for several homes in Aurora, San Joaquin and Colonia Azteca, among others, that experienced severe wind damage near Donna, Texas.

Forrester said, “Our trained conference disaster response coordinators and teams have responded to emergencies in their areas— it is great to see the church prepared and equipped to respond.   We need more churches and congregation members to join this growing movement of disaster and mission ministry to survivors.”

Forrester also said he has been in contact with United Methodist disaster coordinators in all of the affected areas and that UMCOR stands ready to assist as needed. He said the grant to the Arkansas Conference will be utilized for the cleanup efforts, temporary housing needs and equipment.

More severe weather may be on the way this coming weekend, as the slow start to the 2015 tornado season ramps up.

Please continue to pray for all who have been affected by last weekend’s storms and for those who remain in harm’s way. Visit the UMCOR website to learn how you can make a difference in crisis.

Praying the Spirits Out
“Why couldn’t we cast out that demon?” Jesus’s disciples asked him after a healing.

“Throwing this kind of spirit out requires prayer,” Jesus responded. [Mark 9:28-29, CEB]

This coming Sunday, May 24, is Day of Prayer across the Virginia Conference as called by our Bishop, Young Jin Cho.  It’s an important day for Wesleyan Christians because it is also the date of John Wesley’s warmed heart experience at Aldersgate Chapel, an experience that led to revival and renewal across the British Isles and eventually across the Atlantic.  I hope that your congregation is planning to recognize the day in some way as part of your services.  My greater hope would be that our prayers for the revival and renewal of our churches and our denomination would be a regular part of our life.  Bishop Cho specifically mentioned Swain Memorial [Tangier] UMC’s practice of weekly prayer for renewal in his announcement of the Day.

Jesus’s story also reminds us to pray out the demons that beset us as well.  How would you name those demons?  Despair, division, closedness, lack of trust, mutual suspicion, failure to uplift one another, waning compassion, anger — all of these are demons I would like to cast out of our churches.  But “throwing out [these kinds] of spirit requires prayer,” according to the One who should know.

Prayer places us within God’s vision and intention.  Prayer reminds us of who we are and who we are not.  Prayer opens us to receive the fruits of the Spirit.  And if we were open to receive those - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control [Galatians 5:22-23] — I have no doubt that God’s future will be our future.

Stand firm,
Alex

PS - We have now come to the end of our appointment season.  We are anticipating 5 moves on the district this year.  Throughout the conference we have made 194 projections for moves.  Making appointments is hard and holy work and I have some observations on the process that I will be sharing at our upcoming Annual Conference Orientation on June 1 at 6:30 PM at Franktown.  All of the appointments will be posted on the Conference website next week.  Clergy, if you have not heard from me otherwise, you can assume that you are projected to return to your current appointment for the coming year.  I appreciate all your prayers for me and the Cabinet as we have gone about this work.

So they loaded up the truck and moved to? Friday, June 5th beginning at 6 pm Trinity UMC in Cape Charles will host the Farewell/Anticipation Dinner to honor 5 clergy and their familes who will be moving to new appointments.  All Eastern Shore district clergy and their families are invited to attend.

Please RESERVE YOUR DINNER RESERVATIONS at the District Office at easternshoredistrict@vaumc.org or call 757-665-6295.
