Have Bag Will Travel - Public Health Nursing

“Have Bag will Travel” Adventures in Public Health Nursing (Exhibit)
May 13- Sept 23

Public Health Nurses played a major role in overseeing the health of in the early days of rural Alberta. The first homesteaders generally had to rely on themselves for medical services and it was the general isolation that empowered women to learn and practice medical care with the herbs, roots, and berries that worked for their mothers.

The early homesteaders had to rely on these home remedies and how-to manuals as trained nurses and doctors slowly came West in the early 20th century.

These “pioneering” nurses would become the Alberta’s Public Health Nurses and were the front-line of health education and promotion and provided many pieces of health literature to their patients - pamphlets, brochures, and booklets help people learn how to live healthier lives.

One of their most important jobs was to visit rural and remote areas of the province and made regular visits to “settler homes” where residents rarely saw a doctor. The nurses also performed school health inspections in these areas, gave prenatal and home nursing classes to residents and provided immunizations.

So stop by our current museum exhibit, “Have Bag will Travel”,  that showcases and honours the major role of Public Health Nurses in those tumultuous early days of health in rural Alberta.
Early Remedies to Cure What Ails Ya!
  • Kerosene or “coal oil” was a cure-all was known to be used to for many different ailments like sore throats, flu, cuts and coughs. (To cure a sore throat;  the kerosene was rubbed on the neck and a couple of drops were taken internally.)
  • Goose grease or goose fat had a wide variety of uses, commonly used for chesty colds it was also used for chapped skin, and protecting leather.
  • Cornstarch - The early settlers used it to treat burns, canker sores, and for sore dentures.
  • Vinegar was used to sooth bad sunburns or insect bites.
  • Peanut oil - was used to cure the pain arthritis.
  • (I cannot vouch for all of them, but hey I have tried a few and they worked!)
