Speech-Language and Audiology Canada (SAC) recognizes the second Wednesday in May as Swallowing Awareness Day. Many people have never heard of dysphagia and have no idea that speech-language pathologists are the professionals who assess and treat swallowing disorders. Swallowing Awareness Day is our opportunity to bring attention to dysphagia and to connect people with the professionals who can help.
Did you know?
- The prevalence of dysphagia may be as high as 22% in those over the age of 50.
- Up to 78% of stroke patients have a swallowing disorder.
- 85% of people with Parkinson’s disease have voice, speech and/or swallowing difficulties.
