Swallowing Awareness Day
Wednesday, May 13, 2015

Speech-Language and Audiology Canada (SAC) recognizes the second Wednesday in May as Swallowing Awareness Day. Many people have never heard of dysphagia and have no idea that speech-language pathologists are the professionals who assess and treat swallowing disorders. Swallowing Awareness Day is our opportunity to bring attention to dysphagia and to connect people with the professionals who can help.

Did you know?

  • The prevalence of dysphagia may be as high as 22% in those over the age of 50.
  • Up to 78% of stroke patients have a swallowing disorder.
  • 85% of people with Parkinson’s disease have voice, speech and/or swallowing difficulties.

Spread the Word

Getting involved in this awareness day can be as simple as starting a conversation on social media. We encourage you to tweet, post, blog and share information about dysphagia, Swallowing Awareness Day, Speech and Hearing Month or your own personal stories — and be sure to use the #maymonth hashtag!

For more tips, celebration ideas and downloadable resources, visit www.maymonth.ca. Professionals who work in dysphagia management should also make sure that information is listed in their Find A Professional profiles
