These are our youth group seniors for 2015! This Sunday, we honor Grace, Heather, Jessica, Joey, Kayla, and Zach!
We are a Christ-following community that brings ourselves and
others closer to God.
Good News?  Yep. Here are a couple of things to start off: This Saturday is Change the World Saturday! Lots of Catalina volunteers will be out in the community sharing God's light and love! Another one: you are part of a church that CARES about others and is striving to be part of God's solution to the problems in our world, and not just part of the problem!

Change the World Saturday is May 16! There will be several different projects to choose from! Get the info and sign up here!

Youth 2015 Update
We have raised almost half of what we need for our trip to YOUTH 2015 this summer!
If you missed your opportunity to pick up an envelope to support our youth group's trip to YOUTH 2015, you can still get one from Richard. But wait! There's more!
You can also make your donation online. Go here and scroll down to the box that is labelled "Other Restricted Fund" and enter your amount. Beside that box, type "Youth Fundraiser" in the box.
And start saving your change, especially quarters, for a special collection in early spring! You can track our progress, and see a new message from our youth every 100 miles closer we get to our goal. Look for the maps in the Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall.

Check out the May Family Ministry Calendar here!

You can still return your 2015-2016 Financial Giving Pledge this Sunday to help our church leaders form a responsible ministry budget for the next year. You can place your pledge card in the offering plate this Sunday. Many of you received apledge card in the mail, and pledge cards will be available in our worship services. Also, you can complete your pledge online here. An explanation of the pledge process is here.
Last Saturday was the Letter Carriers' Food Drive! This is the largest one-day food drive in America!  Here are some of Catalina volunteers!

TUNA AND BEANS!

Each year all the United Methodist Churches in the Desert Southwest Conference meet during the 3rd week of June in Glendale, Arizona. Catalina will be represented there, led by Pastor Matt and the lay leaders of the church. In conjunction with this annual event the conference invites each congregation to
participate in a service event that will benefit the community they represent.
This year the project is the collection of food items, specifically, tuna fish and beans (dry or canned). these items will be donated to our local food pantry as we attempt to feed those in need. Starting Sunday, you will have the opportunity to bring your donation of tuna and beans to the church and place them in the boxes marked “Annual Conference Project, Feeding the Hungry.” Boxes are located at the entrance to the sanctuary and in Fellowship Hall.  Donations will be collected through June 28.

"[These] ancients taught that prayer was participation in God's love, the activity that takes us out of ourselves, away from the familiar, and conforms us to the path of Christ."
-Diana Butler Bass

Father Richard Rohr has written an interesting article called "Practical Prayer" . He quotes Diana Butler Bass:
"[Jesus' invitation to] 'Come follow me' was intimately bound up with the practice of prayer. For prayer connects us with God and others, 'part of this enterprise of learning to love.' Prayer is much more than a technique, and early Christians left us no definitive how-to manual on prayer. Rather, the desert fathers and mothers believed that prayer was a disposition of wholeness, so that 'prayer and our life must be all of a piece.'

How does prayer fit with life? Read the whole article here.

Online Giving

Did you know that giving to support God's work through Catalina UMC is as simple as clicking here? It is!

There is MUCH MORE!

There is a good online devotional here.
Read about everything going on at Catalina in the Catalina News!

By the way, church news and church event photos are always welcome!
Send submissions to richard@catalinamethodist.org by Tuesday noon. We intentionally keep this email brief (so we cannot include everything) and we intentionally keep it about Catalina (so, please, no requests to announce outside events). If you are submitting a photo, send it to richard.lee.jones@gmail.com (Gmail works better with large attachments like photos).
We are experimenting with a smartphone app for our church.
Would you be willing to check it out and let us know what you think?

Here is how you find it:

1-Search the Play Store for "My Church App" [by Custom Church Apps] and install the app.
2-Open My Church App

4-In the box the says "Enter church, pastor, or location", type in "Catalina".
5-When Catalina United Methodist Church is returned as the result of your search, tap Catalina United Methodist Church.
6-When the dialog box asks if you want to set Catalina as your default church, choose yes.
7-Now, whenever you open My Church App, it will open the Catalina app.

One other experiment...
We are trying out a digital bulletin [currently in The Refuge] as an alternative to the paper bulletin. In other words, the bulletin would come to you on your smartphone, and you would not need the paper copy.
Here is how you access it: Text `catalina` to 404.620.6209 to subscribe to your digital bulletin.
