Kia ora <<First Name>>

Employers, educators and stakeholders turned out in droves to the launch of Futureforce Action Network (FAN) in Thames-Coromandel late last month, where they were inspired and encouraged to improve their employment offering to the district's young people.

More than 160 people, about 90 of them employers, attended the Smart Waikato Trust event and were given free tools to assist them in offering more work experience, jobs, apprenticeships and cadetships to youth.

Almost 900 people now belong to the region-wide network, which gives free access to an on-line suite of HR tools, with follow-up workshops and consultancy services available for employers keen to access further assistance.

A FAN Activate Workshop will be held in Thames on May 20 to follow on from the event.

Treasury officials hosted by Smart Waikato on regional tour

Government treasury officials visiting Waikato recently had an overview of regional economic development, as well as a tour of some of the best the region has to offer.

Smart Waikato Trust chief executive Mary Jensen hosted director of growth and public services Jane Frances, economic performance and strategy team leader Matthew Gilbert and labour market and tertiary team leader Hayden Fenwick during their two-day Waikato tour.

The group visited Waikato Innovation Park, Waikato District Council, University of Waikato, Wintec Trades Academy, Waikato Regional Council, attended the Regional Labour Market Forum at Wintec and heard about the challenges and growth in the regional economy.

“This was an excellent opportunity to get the economic development issues, anomalies in the education and social sectors and other concerns of our region before this policy development branch of Government,” Mary said.

Career planning on the agenda for Waikato Diocesan students

More than 140 year 11 students from Waikato Diocesan School for Girls concentrated on careers at their camp at Turangawaewae Marae, Ngaruawahia recently.

The students attending the half-day Smart Waikato Trust career workshop were put through their paces with career planning, networking and career research and exploration sessions.

They also had the opportunity to role play how to approach a potential employer.

Smart Waikato HR expert Linda Nelson Caie said the students were at a crucial age to be thinking about careers.

"The earlier young people start to think about their career options the better. It's important they choose the right subjects to ensure they are not narrowing the careers they will be able to pursue in the future," Linda said.

Want your young people to make smarter career choices and connect with Waikato employers face-to-face?

Smart Waikato delivers careers seminars and workshops via its FutureForce Career Services that offer a practical approach to making smart education to employment decisions. Services are delivered to schools, tertiary institutions and parents according to demand.

These take the form of:
Practical career planning workshops for students and/or parents – expanding career ideas, practical tools and advice for career planning and research, work readiness and networking.

Interactive employer roadshows – employers from a variety of sectors visit schools to give students an opportunity to find out more about different career options. This is also an excellent chance for students to network with some of the region's most motivated employers.

FAN HR specialist Linda Nelson Caie is taking bookings for FutureForce™ Career Services now. This service is in demand so please email her today with your interest linda@smartwaikato.co.nz.
