Xela AID Celebrates Mothers of the San Martin Community

Xela AID's Leaders of the Future group put on a fun-filled Mother's Day celebration for the San Martin community. Over 125 mothers gathered to see singing and dance performances, poetry readings, and participate in fun activities for all. Everyone enjoyed freshly made tamales and tea to close out the festivities.

Xela AID Staff Receives
Montessori Teacher Training

Every Friday from 2-6 PM, Xela AID's Literacy Program Coordinator Alicia Lucia de León Lopez, Xela AID's Study Center teacher Juana Lopez Gomez (pictured at right), and Literacy Group Member Fabiana Vasquez de León attend Montessori Teacher Training in the town of Xela. The two-year training course is taught by certified Montessori teacher Sherly Yancor, who has a Montessori preschool of her own in Xela with over 35 students. After their completion of the course, all three of the students will be certified to teach using the Montessori Method.

Much of their training includes studying the Montessori Method of education that comes from the teachings of Maria Montessori. The Montessori Method involves focusing on the independence of the child and uses educational materials to emphasise a child's natural psychological, physical, and social development. Teachers training includes not only lectures, but also time to practice what they've learned. The student teachers are even making their own manuals with activity descriptions and photos to help educate other teachers in the San Martin community.

All of this would not be possible without the support of Xela AID Board Member Sherry Robin, who is generously funding their training along with any materials they need.

"All three of them are very happy to be receiving this training. It is a wonderful opportunity that I am proud to support," says Sherry.

Special thanks to Sherry for her ongoing support of Xela AID's Literacy Program and Study Center! To see more photos from their training courses, visit our Facebook album Montessori Teacher Training

Xela AID's Work Study Scholarship Program (WSS) Continues to Thrive!

Xela AID's Work Study Scholarship Program (WSS) is growing! We are proud to continue welcoming new students into our program and provide them with the life-changing opportunity of education. Pictured at left, WSS Student Miguel Vasquez, smiles with a sign that says "Gracias por mi beca," which translates to, "Thank you for my scholarship." Because of the help of his sponsors, Damian and Ann Jackowski Sheriffs, Miguel is able to continue his education.

The process begins when students first meet with Xela AID's Education Coordinator Lucky Gonzalez in order to be accepted into our program. Lucky goes over the requirements of the program with the student and their family, including an analysis of their current grades. Students are then placed on our Work Study Scholarship Program Waiting List until a Xela AID supporter is found to sponsor the child. We are proud to say that our program now has over 100 students who are thriving in school thanks to the help of their sponsors!
