May in Religious Education

Service

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES are finished for the church year and will resume in September. Child care and activities will be provided during May services and throughout the summer by our wonderful Sprouts teacher Laurrisa Hurst and volunteers. We still need volunteers to assist during the summer, so that we have the required two adults with our children each Sunday. Look for the signup sheet at the RE Table during Coffee Hour.

BALTIMORE UPRISING LISTENING SESSION -- Join us 9:30 a.m. on Sunday in the Enoch Pratt Hall as we come together as a congregation to talk about the recent protests and unrest in Baltimore. Questions of inequality and systemic oppression have been brought once again to the fore of our national conversation. We at First Unitarian Baltimore mourn the deaths, damage to people's livelihoods, and the underlying concerns over justice.  As a community, we are working to host gatherings that reflect our faith's call to bring people together and help those in need.

THIS SUNDAY'S MORNING SERVICE: May 17 -- Baltimore Coalition of Reason presents Rev. Dr. Barry A. Lynn, Executive Director of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. Rev. Dr. Lynn is the Executive Director of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State will address our congregation as we host the members of the Baltimore Coalition of Reason. Children are encouraged to join us for the first part of the service, after which we will sing  them out to childcare and activities.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIFE OF A CHILD OR YOUTH! Volunteer in our wonderful RE program. The RE Committee for Children and Youth is looking for teachers, assistants and nursery volunteers for next church year. This is a great chance to help our young people explore life's big questions and grow spirituality. Join others who have already volunteered.  Sign up at the RE Table during Coffee Hour. For more information, contact Interim DRE Karen Lee Scrivo or RE Chair Melinda Walker. And see the RE Blog on the church website: http://www.firstunitarian.net/index.php/component/k2/item/223-looking-ahead-to-next-year-in-religious-education-for-children-and-youth

YOUR INPUT REQUESTED for an idea that would affect RE next year. Presented by Rev. Olson at the recent Board Listening Session on RE for All Ages,  it would change the format of Sunday mornings in the fall to have RE classes for all ages followed by morning worship for all. Several churches have successfully moved to this format as a way for more people to participate in both services and religious education.  Please contact RE Committee for Children and Youth Chair Melinda Walker, Rev. Olson or Interim DRE Karen Lee Scrivo for more information and to share your thoughts.

4th GRADE TUTORS @ PACA SCHOOL NEEDED for after school homework help for next school year. Tutors commit to working with a student one day a week for 45 minutes, beginning at 3 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. This opportunity is open to middle and high schools students as well as adults. For more information: Contact Social Action Clearinghouse Co-Chair Roberta Van Meter at msvee505@gmail.com.

Greetings from
Interim DRE Karen Lee Scrivo

I feel blessed and honored to be joining First Unitarian Church of Baltimore as your Interim Director of Religious Education, following my wonderful colleague and friend Becky Brooks.  I look forward to getting to know you and serving this historic congregation.

Involved in religious education for more than 20 years, I have been a director of religious education, RE teacher, Our Whole Lives leader, youth adviser and RE Committee member in various congregations in Maryland. I am currently on the adjunct staff of the Joseph Priestley District of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

I have served as an Interim DRE at Cedar Lane UU Church (Bethesda); Paint Branch UU Church (Adelphi); and the UU Congregation of Columbia.  I also been an acting DRE at my home congregation, Goodloe Memorial UU Congregation, when the DRE went on sabbatical many years ago.

A low residency student at Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, Calif., I hope to graduate this May.  In my past lives, I have been a journalist, a college professor and a Montessori teacher.  I hold masters' degrees in International Relations (George Washington University) and Communications (American University), a Montessori teaching certificate (Advanced Institute of Montessori Studies) and a bachelor's degree in Journalism from Kent State University.

My husband, Ken Shilling, and I live in Glenn Dale, Md.  We were married 30 years ago by the Rev. Fred Muir of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis.  We have a grown son, Kelson, who is a lab research assistant at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

I am a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., and grew up in Wheaton, Ill. and Lorain, Ohio.  I am happy to return to Baltimore, where I last worked as an Associated Press reporter in the mid 1980s.
