Thank you for your support of the NZ Sailing Trust! We are having a great year so far.
As we continue our work to inspire the next generation of New Zealanders through maritime experiences, since the January we have had 43 days at sea on charter with school students, plus another 24 days at sea with groups sharing either racing or sailing experiences.
A total of 360 students across eight schools have benefited from the experience of multi-day experiences aboard either Lion New Zealand or Steinlager 2 so far this year.
The NZ Sailing Trust team work with the schools to achieve the specific objectives set prior to departure. As well as the curriculum based learnings the students develop their teamwork, communication and leadership skills in order to help sail the yacht and reach their destination each day. On the final day of the 4-6 day journeys the students themselves take responsibility to sail the yacht home this leave them with a great sense of achievement at the end of the journey.
Some comments from students after recent journeys:
“I learnt leadership and tolerance of others and having to live close with others”
“We learned to get out of our comfort zone and learned more about safety and how important it is”
“An amazing, enjoyable and challenging lifetime experience that I will never forget about”
“Working as a team played a big part and I believe that myself and my class peers achieved it because whenever help was needed everyone was willing to help”
Winter Maintenance Programme
In order to maintain a safe and functional platform to deliver our youth development programmes aboard our yachts there is a demand to continually maintain, repair and upgrade aspects of our vessels each year. The Trust plan to use the upcoming quieter months to undertake some essential survey, repairs and maintenance work.
The 2015 winter will have Steinlager 2 out of the water for anti-foul and survey inspections. Lion New Zealand will be undergoing some interior boat building and re-configuring to bring her functionality up to par with Steinlager 2 after many years of wear and tear.
We have the help of many supportive businesses in the NZ marine industry and independent funders to thank for the help with the restoration and on-going upkeep of both Steinlager 2 and Lion New Zealand. The standard of presentation of the yachts is a true tribute to the craftsmanship, pride and pleasure that our supporters have in their work.
Volunteers keen to learn and help during this maintenance period will be most welcome. Please email info@nzsailingtrust.com with some information on your availability (weekdays/weekends) and where you could help.
Racing
Auckland to Tauranga Yacht Race
Early April saw Steinlager 2 bring a crew from all over the North Island to compete in the Auckland to Tauranga Yacht Race. Crew from Wellington, Napier, New Plymouth, Auckland and Bay of Islands joined together to race. Steinlager was second yacht of the 29 strong fleet to Channel Island, but there was unfortunately left behind in the light conditions that suited the lighter yachts in the fleet. A great race was enjoyed by all who participated.
Coastal Classic on Lion New Zealand
Next overnight passage race is the Coastal Classic on 23rd October, 2015. We have 20 places for crew available aboard Lion New Zealand. Please email info@nzsailingtrust.com if you are interested in more information or would like sign up for the Coastal Classic in October.
