The Perfect Place News

Welcome to the third edition of the WBBROC newsletter.  Our reading membership is slowly growing, so thank you for your ongoing interest.  We hope you find this edition informative.

Don't forget that the WBBROC website (www.wbbroc.org.au) also has up-to-date information about our organisation.

WBBROC members met at Parliament House on 21 May and met with the Deputy Premier and several other Ministers.

Brisbane meetings with Ministers

WBBROC members held their regular meeting at Parliament House on 21 May.  Following the meeting, members met with Jackie Trad, the Deputy Premier and Minister for Transport, Minister for Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning and Minister for Trade.  She gave members a good hearing and promised to follow-up on some of our issues with other Ministers.

In its meeting with Anthony Lyneham, Minister for State Development, WBBROC sought funding for the Transport Network Study for the Port of Bundaberg.  The Minister declared that his Department did not have the money to directly assist us, but that we should seek funding through the Government's Building Our Regions funding program.

When meeting with Leeanne Enoch, Minister for Science and Innovation, WBBROC asked about co-funding for the Regional Innovation Centre.  WBBROC trialled the work of this Centre last year, assisting 6 businesses in the region to take their business to the next level, and we want to help more businesses in the region.

Minister Enoch asked us to send her a submission, which we have done.

Mark Bailey, the Minister for Main Roads, listened to our concerns about the lack of appropriate areas for heavy vehicles to de-couple their trailers on the edge of towns.  We are currently putting together further information to forward to the Minister, and hope that we will receive some support for creating built-for-purpose sites in the future.

WBBROC hopes that these approaches will be successful for the region, in time.  Nevertheless, WBBROC Mayors will follow up with a further visit to Brisbane in November to meet with Ministers again.

Tell Your Friends!

Please tell your friends and family in South East Queensland about the opportunity to visit the Wide Bay Burnett display at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre on Saturday 13 June (with a business day on Friday 12 June, from 12 noon).

They will also be able to enter our competition and a chance to win a 10-night regional trail holiday in the Wide Bay Burnett!  While they are at the Convention Centre, they can visit our interactive display, collect brochures and product samples from the region, and much more.

We will be part of a showcase of all the regions in the State.  With our region within easy travelling distance of SEQ, it is a great opportunity to show people how easy it is to enjoy the type of lifestyle we enjoy in the Wide Bay Burnett and still be able to easily retain any connections to the "big smoke".

To check out details about the regional trail holiday competition, simply visit the Perfect Place website www.widebayburnett.qld.gov.au closer to 12 June.

The ROC Assembly

Each year, the LGAQ holds an Assembly for all the ROCs (Regional Organisations of Councils) in Queensland.  This year, the Deputy Premier gave attendees an hour of her time.

She made the point that Local Government needs a senior voice around the Cabinet table, which is why the newly elected Government had given that role to the Deputy Premier. She also emphasised that with Trade as part of her responsibilities, the portfolio provides lots of opportunities for local government.

The Deputy Premier also reiterated her Government's commitment to maintain a regular dialogue with local government.

WBBROC Chair, Cr Mal Forman, raised the issue of how changes to planning legislation impose costs on Councils to implement those changes.  Although the Deputy Premier assured attendees that support would be provided for any changes and that there would be consultation with local government, she did not outline what some of those changes might be.

Water Alliance Forum

WBBROC held a special forum to gain insights from other regions and how they have developed alliances to manage their water assets.  Members listened to speakers from Mackay City Council, Unity Water and the Lower Macquarie Water Alliance and will now build on the ideas gained, to develop a framework that will work in a region as dispersed as ours.

WBBROC's Water and Waste Water Advisory Committee will help WBBROC to develop this framework.
