SAWBO is proud to present the first in a series of spotlight portraits highlighting the work of some of our collaborators around the world.  They all have unique experiences and innovative uses of our animations, and we are happy to have the opportunity to show the positive work that they all have been doing in different corners of the globe.

As always, please feel free to share your suggestions with us at animations@illinois.edu

SAMUEL AMOA-MENSA

CLCD-GHANA

My name is Samuel Amoa-Mensa and I am the country director of the Centre for Learning and Community Development (CLCD) in Ghana. The main goal of the organization is to make the community self-reliant and reduce the amount of poverty within the community. CLCD knows that the best way to do this is by making educational content available to the entire community and teaching them valuable skills that will improve their working capabilities.

I started working with SAWBO in 2012 after attending a workshop given by SAWBO’s directors in Accra, Ghana.  After hearing about the work that they do creating and distributing educational content, I knew they could take the work that the CLCD does to the next level. Since then, I have been distributing and sharing SAWBO’s animations in CLCD training sessions all over the country – they have been shown in universities, schools, church communities, hospitals, and other relevant institutions like farmers groups.

While SAWBO offers us many different ways to watch, download and share their animations, I’ve personally found that the most useful device to be the Extension System In Your Wallet. SAWBO offers a wide range of topics in their animations, like health, agriculture and women empowerment, but the most popular topic among the people I've shown the animations to are those that are related to health.

In trying to track the impact of the animations, I can say that I have showed them to 638 people in CLCD training sessions, plus the estimated 3000 people that have gained access to them through talks I have given. Additionally, there are other trainers from CLCD that have deployed animations to an estimated number of 1000 people. Therefore, we can conservatively estimate that through the CLCD, SAWBO has reached a total of 60,000 people.  However, in reality the numbers are likely far greater. All the new information we've been able to distribute through our normal operations because of the SAWBO materials has increased the impact of CLCD in Ghana.

One of my favorite ways that SAWBO has impacted here in Ghana is that volunteers from CLCD have had the opportunity to do translations and voice-overs for animations in their local languages.  They all love seeing that their names are included in the credits, and that it is their own voices that are able to reach into our community and have a positive impact on Ghana!
