"Summertime, and the livin is easy"

... or so the song goes.  However, it's not always true in the yard.  Certain changes pop up in summer.  Don't sweat it!  Here are some summer tips:

Adjust mowers to a higher setting.  A height of 3" means more shade and more surface area to pick up nutrients, resulting in a stronger root system.

Drought conditions.   Don't try to water a brown lawn until it turns green again.  It puts a tremendous stress on the grass, leaving it susceptible to pests and disease.  A brown lawn is a dormant lawn that will recover as long as any traffic on it is kept to a minimum.

Planting in summer.   Healthy containers and balled trees can be safely planted throughout the summer as long as they are watered during dry periods.  Thoroughly soak the root ball every few days.

Deadheading.  Most annuals and perennials reward you with second blooms.  Pinch below the spent flower and just above the first set of full, healthy leaves.  Cutting back herbs through the summer keeps them busy and productive.

Fall bloomers.  Pinch out the flower buds of asters, mums, goldenrod and other fall bloomers to keep plants bushy and prevent early flowering.

Fertilize houseplants.  They love some fertilizing while they are actively growing this summer.  Most plants flourish with a little time outside.
