Every Hero Has a Story

Summer brings sunny days and starry nights, both made for long stretches of reading! Sign up for our Summer Reading Program to enhance your seasonal enjoyment of books with programs, activities, and materials. Set your reading goal, check out some books, and find the programs that interest you. Heroic adventures and discoveries await with the summer theme of Every Hero Has a Story!

Did You Know?

You can eat a Breakfast of Heroes twice this summer, and you can plant vegetables on the Youth Terrace. The Library edition of The Amazing Race is a scavenger hunt. Book discussions and food-centered programs continue through the summer. Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus will be celebrated, as will heroes and villains during A Night at the Library. Superhero swag, comics, costumes, and robots can all be created. Check the library schedule for dates and ages for these programs that require registration.

Looking for a drop-in program? You can learn about water safety and bats. There are water adventures, discovery bottles, and flip books to be found! Storytimes and a storywalk will be back. Do you want to participate in a Superhero Olympics?  Concerts with Randy Kaplan and Guy Louis are coming, as are a superhero stunt show with Doug Scheer, and Heroic Stories, Songs, and Dances of Old Michigan with Trois Buffons. Bring your heroic summer to a close with an ice cream social featuring the Saline Fiddlers. Finally, choose your prize at the Book Bash!

Check out the Summer Reading Brochure for more information on all these programs and more!

CHECK IT OUT: Biographies

Is your hero a real person?  Our biography collection contains many stories of the lives of people you admire. Learn more about your favorite political leader, humanitarian, athlete, artist, writer, environmentalist, or activist. Reading biographies helps you learn about the historical time during which the subject lived, what the person achieved, and the character traits that were demonstrated through the person’s life. Biographies can be found in the back of the youth room, by the door to the terrace, and are shelved in alphabetical order by the last name of the person who is the subject of the biography.
