Faces of the Village

Roy Andrews, who, with his late sister Barbara and wife Janet, operated a fresh fruit and vegetable shop selling a lot of produce grown on his smallholding on Straight Road for forty years until retiring 10 years ago.

His neighbours, Mclauchlans, are glad of Roy's skills, especially when there are jobs to be done urgently, such as planting strawberries.  The plants are continuously fed in by two people sitting on the back of a planting machine which is pulled by a tractor.  Roy can tell us at the end of each row exactly how many plants he has put through the machine.  Not bad for someone who will be celebrating his 80th birthday next year.

Junction between Church Road and Burnt Dick Hill

Subject: RE: Ref. Junction between Church Road and Burnt Dick Hill, Boxted - ECC-058816-15

Dear Cllr Brown

Thank you for your email received 14 May 2015 regarding the surfacing works at the junction with Burnt Dick Hill and Church Road.

I am advised by the Senior Engineer that these two roads are narrow but the bellmouth of Burnt Dick Hill widens out with a small verge triangle to form a Bennett type junction. The triangular verge area concerned had become completely overrun with no grass growing, creating a mud bath effect in inclement weather.

The Engineering Team discovered that the small triangle verge had metalled carriageway beneath it; therefore the soil was removed and the carriageway potholes were repaired.

I can confirm that the junction will now be surface dressed and will revert to a normal T-style junction solving the problem of the constant overrun of the verge island.

Thank you for contacting us in respect of this matter.

Kind Regards

Neighbourhood Watch

Police arrested a man who came equipped for a burglary in the early hours of Saturday morning on Horkesley Road. He had parked a car behind a hedge with the rear car seats down and there was a makeshift roof rack. He was also charged with driving without insurance and road tax.

This bench in Boxted churchyard received some TLC recently.  In the course of cleaning the plaque it came to light that the brass had been recycled from a building that had a connection with orthopaedics.  Does anyone know the origin of it?
