Our fantastic fall books announced.
"A book, too, can be a star, 'explosive material, capable of stirring up fresh life endlessly,' a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe."
- Madeleine L'Engle

Here at BTL we're lit up about our fantastic forthcoming titles and can't wait anymore to share the news. This fall BTL authors declare the futility of war to resolve conflict; tackle unconscious bias and prejudice; tell stories of escape to Canada; investigate how technology promotes polarization; celebrate "a worker's friend"; remember Joe Hill; and give a no-nonsense look at globalization, international development, the money crisis, and renewable energy. Find the details below.

Our fall line-up:

Cyber-Proletariat:
Global Labour in the Digital Vortex

By Nick Dyer-Witheford

From the Coltan Mines in the Congo, to electronics factories in China, to devastated Detroit neighbourhoods, Cyber-Proletariat shows us the dark-side of the information revolution through an unsparing analysis of class power and computerization. Cyber-Proletariat will be available (pre-fall!) in July 2015.

Disarming Conflict:
Why Peace Cannot Be Won on the Battlefield
By Ernie Regehr

Wars fought over the past quarter century have been a spectacular failure. The overwhelming majority end in military stalemate and are settled at the negotiating table, with the grievances that led to the war still unresolved. In Disarming Conflict famed peace activist Ernie Regehr shows that force cannot simply override or transcend the social, political, and economic realities of conflict. Disarming Conflict will be out in September 2015.

Flight and Freedom:
Stories of Escape to Canada

By Ratna Omdivar and Dana Wagner

A collection of thirty astonishing interviews with refugees, their descendants, or their loved ones to document their extraordinary, and sometimes harrowing, journeys of flight. The stories span two centuries of refugee experiences in Canada where asylum seekers collide with state scrutiny and face the challenges of resettlement. Flight and Freedom will be on bookstore shelves in September 2015.

Deep Diversity
Overcoming Us vs. Them

by Shakil Choudhury

What if our interactions with those different from us are strongly influenced by things happening below the radar of awareness, hidden even from ourselves? Deep Diversity argues that “us vs. them” is an unfortunate but normal part of the human experience due to reasons of both nature and nurture. Choudhury helps readers identify their own bias and offers practical ways to break the “prejudice habits” we have all learned, in order to tackle systemic discrimination. Deep Diversity hits the shelves in October 2015.

Joe Hill
The IWW & the Making Of A Revolutionary Working Class Counterculture

By Franklin Rosemont

A monumental work that explores the issues of US labour’s most world-renowned martyr and celebrated songwriter Joe Hill raised—capitalism, white supremacy, gender, religion, wilderness, law, prison, industrial unionism—and their enduring relevance and impact in the century since his death. Collected too is all of his art, plus scores of other illustrations featuring Hill-inspired art by IWWs from Ralph Chaplin to Carlos Cortez, as well as other labour artists. This book was previously published by Charles H Kerr (2003). Joe Hill arrives in stores in November of 2015.

Ginger Goodwin
A Worker's Friend

By Laura Ellyn

With bright, strong imagery, Ginger Goodwin presents the story of labour activist and martyr Albert “Ginger” Goodwin. This accessible and thoughtful graphic history explores Goodwin’s life, work, and death in the mining communities of Cumberland and Trail, British Columbia. Drawing on local history, and exploring the ways the history of labour organizing affects contemporary movements, Ginger Goodwin is a story that needs to be shared. Ginger Goodwin comes out in November 2015.

Globalization
Buying and selling the world

by Wayne Ellwood

Globalization has an ever-increasing effect on our lives. It has made the world smaller and brought us closer together yet it can also make us more vulnerable and divided. The deregulation of finance and banking and the crisis they led to is a devastating example of the knock-on effects of globalization. This fully revised fourth edition reviews the history and complexities of globalization, examining the forces in play and whose interests they serve. Pick up the Globalization No-nonsense guide in September 2015.

International development
Illusions and realities

by Maggie Black

The idea of reducing poverty and inequality and improving health, education, and job opportunities around the world is beyond criticism. Yet, the reality of development can often be confusion, contradiction, deceit, and corruption. This fully updated third edition makes a major contribution to the ongoing debate about the effectiveness of aid and development. Get the International Development No-Nonsense guide in September 2015.

The Money Crisis
How bankers grabbed our money-and how we can get it back

by Peter Stalker

What exactly is money and what does it do? We might understand coins, notes, and gold bars but do we understand credit default swaps and sovereign wealth funds? In responding to these questions with concise historical analysis and demystifying language, Peter Stalker exposes the flaws in the system that led to financial crisis. The book provides an understanding of the strategies required for ordinary people to regain control of money. You can spend money to buy The Money Crisis No-nonsense guide in September 2015.

Renewable Energy
Cleaner, Fairer ways to power the planet

by Danny Chivers

Few people doubt the threat of climate change and the urgent need to conquer fossil fuel addiction. But can renewable sources of energy ever be sufficient to provide modern societies with a decent quality of life? This book is clear. They can. And it outlines the strategies to break the barriers to a 100% renewable world. Danny Chivers presents a compelling introduction to renewable technologies for non-technical readers and a roadmap to powering the world, not just sustainably, but democratically.
