Doing Your Own Remodel
Hi Friend,
Are you considering taking on a home remodel project on your own? If so, you may be wondering a few things:
1. Do you need to pull a permit?
2. Is there a chance you may start a project than find out that you don't have the time, tools or skills to do the job?
3. Will you run out of funds before completing the project?
4. Will the job even turn out as you thought?
Those are good questions. First of all, according to the City and County of Denver, "No permit is required for simple projects that only replace (like-for-like) existing cabinets, countertops, tiling, flooring in the same configuration, and/or like-for-like electrical, plumbing or ventilation fixtures." You will need one if you're changing the floor plan, making structural changes or if you will have new or relocated electrical/plumbing fixtures. Now, did you know that there is a homeowner's exam to show proficiency in doing the project? If you pass, you can do the project yourself instead of hiring a contractor.
How about the cost? Get a few quotes from professionals with a separate figure for labor and materials. Run your numbers and compare them.

6 ways to use a prepaid debit card
Greg McBride, CFA • Bankrate.com
Prepaid debit cards are most certainly on a growth trajectory, and the good news for consumers is that many of the higher fee cards that had traditionally characterized the space have been marginalized or discontinued entirely.
Some of the fee-latent celebrity cards for example, have really fallen by the wayside in recent years, and what's come to market instead are offers that have a much more transparent fee structure and just overall a better value proposition for the consumer.
Prepaid debit cards are favored by people who either can't get or don't want a checking account, by college students, by kids who are going off to summer camp, or families who are going on vacation who want to set boundaries around their spending.

Connections
Just recently it occurred to me to see if I could find episodes of a geeky show I used to watch when I was in college: Connections. This is a documentary show that was produced by The Learning Channel and hosted by science historian James Burke. It also the name of his book written in 1978. As Wikipedia describes it, "It took an interdisciplinary approach to the history of science and invention and demonstrated how various discoveries, scientific achievements, and historical world events were built from one another successively in an interconnected way to bring about particular aspects of modern technology". There seems to be a few other shows that have come along with a similar theme but I don't believe they are presented quite as well as Connections. I look forward to watching those episodes again. I highly recommend them. Now you know.
