A New Look For GRFF
Featuring the talent of local Designer Jon Johnson
GRFF is excited to unveil the look of the 2015 festival season! This year's artwork features local landmarks from the cities of Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo created by design talent, Jon Johnson. Johnson is a graphic designer and screen printer living and working in Kitchener. Under the name Bearface Design, Jon creates everything from Logos to Gigposters, to whatever people will let him design.
As BRFC, Jon takes his designs and puts ink to paper, or fabric, or whatever medium will take it. Self-taught in both disciplines, with a degree from WLU in Film Studies, Jon loves projects that he can really put his heart into. A lifelong resident of Waterloo Region, and former 35mm film projectionist, the GRFF design project was the perfect opportunity to celebrate the Region he loves, as well as the medium of film.

The Measure of All Things

The Measure of All Things is a ‘live documentary’ by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Sam Green. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and is a meditation on fate, time, and the outer contours of the human experience. This special presentation is part of the Christie Entertainment Series a partnership with THEMUSEUM, Apollo Cinema and GRFF. Dream For Uganda
Suubi For the Arts
Help us bring the Suubi Fusion Trouple from the slums of Kampala Uganda for an October performance tour to Canada. The evening includes gourmet treats and eats and presents fado star Tony Gouveia and jazz singer Carolina Soares at the Waterloo Region Museum on Wednesday June 3rd, at 7pm. The evening's entertainment will include live and silent auctions of quilts, art and collectables as well as Canvas aLIVE, six professional artists painting original canvasses for auction.

Meet Janice Lee
Kitchener's 2015 Artist in Residence
Multi-disciplinary artist Janice Lee opened the Grand River Film Festival in 2014 with a spoken word piece on film. This year she has been named Kitchener's Artist in Residence and will create Four video poems titled Folk Myths of Kitchener. “To boil it down, I would say I’m am a folk artist, meaning I want to be an artist of the people, telling stories, rooted in our community in what’s happening right now,” explains Lee. Story gathering and filming takes place throughout June across the city of Kitchener. Look for Janice at the Multicultural Festival June 20 in Kitchener's Victoria Park.

3. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
It’s difficult to overstate my overwhelming love of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. Its use of stop-motion animation and creative storytelling is completely unique, interesting to watch, and anyone can get lost in it. It’s timeless in so many ways, with Grinch-like parallels and a host of memorable songs courtesy of the fabulous Danny Elfman.
2. Hugo (2011)
Martin Scorsese’s Hugo is a cinematic marvel. Based on a Brian Selznick novel, the story whirls around a 12-year-old orphan who holes himself up in a Parisian train station in the 1930s. It’s a big-budget epic that uses self-reflexive, brilliant cinematography to boost the visual experience. Using modern techniques to create a compelling story, Scorsese makes this one to watch.
1. Hook (1991)
Jump into a world that was previously forgotten. No other film in Spielberg’s catalog is quite like this one. Although it was never reviewed favorably among critics, it remains a flagship of Robin Williams’ career years after its debut and is beloved by children and adults alike. It’s a classic, with a cast of familiar characters and plenty of sword fighting.
