Lagos State Health Management Agency Bill has been signed into Law


Lagos State Health Management Agency Bill which will mandate Lagosians to have compulsory health insurance was signed to law on Monday 25th of May 2015 by The governor of Lagos state, Babatunde Raji Fashola. The Lagos State Health Management Agency Bill and the Lagos State Health Scheme signed to law, means that there is an agency that will manage the Lagos State Health Scheme which is to be governed by a board with a chairman and other ten members. Also included for appointment is a General Manager to be the accounting officer for the agency.

Family Medicine can guarantee decreased Mortality Rate


The Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON) and its sister body, the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria (AGPMPN) has stated that only Family Medicine can truly guarantee the reduction of mortality rate in the country as family physicians were more closer to the people than other specialties in medicine.

160,000 Nigerian Adolescents HIV positive - NACA


A report presented by Ms Victoria Isiramen of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), has revealed that about 160,000 Nigerian adolescents are infected with the HIV virus while 11,000 have died from the epidemic.

Study in Nigeria finds one in ten Malaria Drugs are poor Quality


A rigorous analysis of more than 3,000 antimalarials purchased in Enugu, Nigeria found 9.3% to be of poor quality, according to new research published in PLOS ONE. Researchers found 1.2% of the samples to be falsified and 1.3% to be degraded, but raised bigger concerns about 6.8% being of substandard manufacture, leaving patients at risk of not receiving the correct treatment dose and potentially contributing to the development of resistance to the main drug used to treat malaria.

Partnering with the National Health Insurance Scheme, Nigeria’s telecommunications company Globacom has introduced a National Mobile Health Insurance Product aimed at improving access to quality health care in the country. The package was developed in conjunction with the NHIS to enhance the health care of millions of Nigerians through their telephone handsets.

First Heritage Hospital opens in Mushin


To meet the medical needs of the local community for provision of quality healthcare services in Mushin and its neighbourhoods, First Heritage Hospital (FHH) was inaugurated in Mushin, Lagos at the weekend. According to the Medical Director and Consultant Family Physician, FHH, Dr. Babatunde Keku, the birth of the hospital was as a result of the overwhelming health needs of Mushin community, which is evident by the high percentage of health incidence, including communicable diseases, chronic ailments, easily preventable disease, amongst others.
