MAY

The excitement of each new plant ready for sale is contagious here at The Natural Garden and we wanted to take a moment to personally invite you to come see our plants during this planting season.  We feel a lot of joyful anticipation each week stocking inventory at the Friendly City Food Coop and preparing for our market stand at The Harrisonburg Farmers Market.  As we bring new species each week the sweetness of sending out our plants to be planted in your gardens really hits home.  Hearing about your projects and helping to find the right plant for your soil and space really is a joyful process.  Below we highlight some of the species we are selling now and invite you all to visit us this planting season.
An exciting addition available now at both locations is the Swamp and Butterfly Milkweed.  These plants continue our efforts to help the Monarch Butterflies find food sources. Both of these species attract many native pollinators and both species leaves are important food sources for the monarch larvae.  The Butterfly Milkweed likes well drained soils and is drought tolerant while the Swamp Milkweed is found in wet soil.

Our current stock has a plant for nearly every soil type from drought-tolerant native wild flowers, to moist-loving plants like the Joe Pye Weed, We also have shade-loving natives such as Wild Bleeding Heart or the Christmas fern.  Our stock of edible, herbal, and medicinal plants is expanding every week as plants are rooted out and ready to be sold.
This week in addition to these Milkweed varieties, we are providing several new species of native plants that are also great for native pollinators, for example: Sundrops, Black-eyed Susan, Switchgrass, Yellow Wild Indigo, White Turtlehead, and Obedient Plant.  Many of these plants are also “deer resistant.”  These new plants will be brought in addition to our current mix of plants.

Look for our freshly printed 2015 Nursery Plant Guide at the Food Co-op and numerous locations around town to see a complete list.  We look forward to seeing you soon and thank you again for your support of native plants!
