Sustainable Communities SA AGM

by Debbie Saegenschnitter

The 7th AGM of Sustainable Communities SA was held on Thursday 21st May at the Adelaide Box Factory Community Centre.  22 members attended and good food and discussion was shared as well as the usual election process.  4 people nominated to form the coordinating committee.  Rosalie Day (Secretary), Monica O’Wheel (Treasurer) and Debbie Saegenschnitter renominated and one new nomination came from the floor, Tania Macdonald will be joining the team in 2015 YAY!

The new committee reminded members that there are funds available to community groups to assist with events and projects.  They were also encouraged to consider organising a members event as with the ‘lean’ coordinating committee it is difficult for them to take on this role.

Following the meeting there was a very passionate and interesting presentation by Sandra Ullrich about the Adelaide Bee Sanctuary http://www.adelaidebeesanctuary.com.au/.  it was both sobering ( if all the bees die the human race would last less than 4.5 years) and hopeful Sandra has more and more hives being sponsored Adelaide  and would love some more volunteers.  If interested contact Sandra at the Adelaide Bee Sanctuary.

Conservation Council of SA membership

by Debbie Saegenschnitter

While we were enjoying our AGM on the 21st of May the Conservation Council (CCSA) were also meeting and one of the agenda items was consideration of new group member applications, of which ours was one.  The email received after the meeting stated our “membership was approved with great enthusiasm.” The implications of being a member of CCSA include we are able to have a vote on issues that the CCSA respond to, we also have access to their resources and now also access to the new Joinery.

The Joinery is the new Sustainability Hub for Adelaide established by the CCSA in the old bus depot on Franklin Street.  I have been spending a bit of time there lately helping get it ready for the grand opening in June 4th.  I would recommend members visit when they get a chance and check out what is being created there, it may also be a good activity for community groups but I suggest you make a time with someone at the CCSA first if taking a larger group.
For further information on CCSA and membership benefits head to http://www.conservationsa.org.au/benefits-of-membership.
