Dear Baildon residents
I can hardly believe a new "municipal year" is upon us following the recent local elections, which included parish elections across the country. Despite our best efforts, there was unfortunately a shortage of candidates in Baildon and whilst there are enough town councillors to operate, we are still in need of additional people to take us to our total of twelve members. Please contact the Town Clerk if you (or somebody you know) are interested in the role. We are also pleased to hear from anyone who is interested in volunteering with the Town Council's projects such as the Farmers' Market and Bracken Hall.
Those with longer memories will know that I have occupied the position of Chair of the Council once before, for two consecutive years between May 2011 and May 2013, having joined the Council in 2008. Inevitably we have gained and lost numerous councillors during those years. Most recently we said farewell to three councillors who have retired, namely Kathy Andrews, Gary Pennington and Marian Taylor. I wish them the very best for the future. Chris Flecknoe, who chaired the Council between 2013 until very recently, has also retired. Chris was a most energetic and effective Chair and she will be greatly missed.
The outlook for 2015/16 is mixed. The budgets of most public services are set to shrink further and there will be some local pressures and strains, with some businesses and residents also feeling the pinch. On the other hand, we have done some sound planning and our community life is ever more vibrant. The devolution of power and resources brings real opportunities to decide locally what services and facilities are important to Baildon and how they should be managed. The interest and commitment of everyone is needed to see us through, so we can continue to look after Baildon and all our friends within.
Cllr Joe Ashton
Chair of Baildon Town Council

Baildon Annual Town Meeting 2015
The Baildon Town Meeting held on the evening of Wednesday 13th May was well attended.
Baildon Ladies Choir (pictured below top) provided musical entertainment and refreshments were served by Baildon Fairtrade members Ruth Anderson and John Anderson.
Chris Flecknoe, the outgoing Town Council Chair, presented the Council's Annual Report and highlights of the evening included a presentation by members of the recently formed Baildon Youth Council, who encouraged intergenerational understanding, and Friends of Bracken Hall whose Secretary Joy Smith spoke enthusiastically about the re-opening of Bracken Hall Countryside Centre. Community Heroes awards were presented to those groups who had received grants from the Council for work in the community (pictured below bottom), as well as three members of the Youth Council.
Thanks to all who came along and made it a very positive event.

The singing children of Africa
A children’s choir from Mombasa is visiting Baildon C of E school on June 9th for a full day. The children will be doing an assembly for the school and then splitting into smaller groups to integrate into the school classes to share learning with the Baildon students. They will also have an opportunity to form friendships and interact at playtimes and they will eat lunch together. Baildon C of E has a good bond with ‘Educate The Kids’ and has hosted the choir before.
The children, aged between 8 and 12 years old, are from a small village in the outskirts of Mombasa called Utange. They are some of the poorest children in the area and this will be their first experience outside of their tiny village. There are 24 children in the choir and four adults (former choir members).
The Choir is due to perform at Bradford University on Friday 12th June, with all proceeds going to the charity www.educatethekids.com. Previous tours raised enough money to build a new classroom and an orphanage that houses 14 children. The main purpose of this tour besides fundraising is to promote sponsorship and the benefits it provides our children and to raise money for the building and repair of water wells and pumps at our school and in the village of Utange.
Tickets are available here.

Walking in and around Baildon
Gentle Walks around Baildon: Every week on Wednesday mornings Baildon Walking Group leads these gentle one hour walks. Meet at bottom of Springfield Road at 10.45am and then return to Wesleys for refreshments. All welcome.
Friends of the Bracken Hall Walks are free but donations are welcome. If you're coming by bus, the connection bus from Bradford and Shipley - TLC 658 - gets to Baildon Lucy Hall Drive/Prod Lane terminus in time for a 10.30am start. Meet John Dallas opposite Bracken Hall Countryside Centre. Please come prepared for the weather! Comfortable waterproof footwear; suitable clothing to keep you warm and dry; a supply of water and a snack; a hot drink if it’s chilly; sun screen and a hat if it’s hot. The nature of the countryside terrain means that most of these walks require a moderate level of fitness and agility and some sections have limited accessibility.
Friday 26th June: Ilkley Moor Walk (13.6km/8.5mi) Meet walk leader John Dallas opposite Bracken Hall Countryside Centre. Walk up the Glen, through Glovershaw and Golcar farms to the 'top road'. Then on to Dick Hudsons, crossing the road and up and onto the moor opposite this pub. Follow the moor path to the Aire/Wharfe watershed, near to Lanshaw Lass and Lad, turning right, follow paths to the ancient sheep enclosure. From here our route heads north to Ilkley Quarry, where we follow the moor road down into Ilkley to return to Baildon or Shipley by Train. From Baildon, walk along Station Road and through Threshfield, along Baildon Bank to Shipley Glen and back to Bracken Hall - alternatively from Shipley, along the Leeds and Liverpool canal to Saltaire, through Roberts Park, the Shipley Glen Tramway Path and finishing at Bracken Hall. Bring money for public transport.
For more guided and for self guided walks see the walks page on our website.
