Happy Memorial Day!

Be sure to remember the veterans who served our country in the past and in the present, as well as those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.  And of course celebrate that freedom!

Running Free Horse Sculpture

I don't know if you are as anxious as I am to see the Running Free Horse and Dancer in bronze, but they are well on their way in the casting process.  Here I am putting on the final touches to the clay.

It wasn't easy cutting up the sculpture I have been sweating over for several months, trying to get every detail "just so", but it needed to be cast in quite a few pieces.  The silicone mold is flexible, but only so much, and it needs to pull off of the wax cast cleanly, without distorting the wax.  This means that complex shapes must be separated into different molds.
The other issue has to do with the cooling of the bronze cast.  Areas like the legs will be solid, while the torso will be hollow, and these areas will not be the same thickness.  It's important to keep the individual bronze castings near the same thickness.  Thin, complex areas need a hotter metal that can flow easily and quickly through the ceramic mold.  Thicker areas cool more slowly in the mold, so these must be cast separately.
Here is what the body and head pieces look like in wax.  The body, head, hair, legs and tail are cast separately.

The Dancer is also finished in clay, and molds are being made of it as well.  You can see more photos and get more information on the blog post "Letting Go".  Many people ask about the green color.  I wish it was something really cool, but this is just a different color of clay, since I ran out of the pink stuff.  I did keep the color uniform on the body and used the green exclusively on the hair to make it easier to judge the quality of the surface.

Back at the Beach

Wyland Gallery in Laguna Beach has invited us back for another solo show, this time in high-season in July.  The show will be on Thursday, July 2, 2015.  That evening is the Laguna Beach Artwalk, when all of the galleries stay open from 6-9pm for an evening party.  We would love to see you there to kick off the July 4th weekend on the beach!  Click here for a map.

Otters and stuff

The otter drawings drew a big response, thanks for all of the votes!  The two otters romping under water and the three pups giggling drew the most votes.  Click here to see the previous newsletter for the concept drawings of the otters.  I am currently working with a gallery in Oregon to gauge their interest in one of them.

I am also working on some new ideas, kind of in the fantasy realm.  I post a lot of this stuff on my social sites, so follow me there to get more frequent updates.

Thanks and have a great summer,

Terrence
