Despite the forecast of rain, Bike to Work Day 2015 was a great success! We counted more than 500 bikers roll through our Energizer Station at City Hall for free a free pancake breakfast and a wonderful transportation fair that highlighted the great bicycle work being done by 15 local organizations. Thanks to everyone who helped make Bike to Work Day 2015 a great success!
A special round of thanks to our partners who helped hugely in the lead up and during BTWD: Crossburgers for serving the free pancake breakfast; The Half Orange for hosting our Bicycle Happy Hour and DJ Lumba Jack for providing the tunes; the Spoke Cyclery for providing free bicycle safety checks at the energizer station; Bike East Bay for providing bicycle valet for the day and all the support/help leading up to the event; all the organizations who took part in this year's Transportation Fair; Councilmembers Kalb, Guillén, Gibson McElhaney, Campbell Washington, Gallo, Vice Mayor Kaplan, and
Mayor Schaaf for riding with us in Pedalpools to City Hall; Bay Area Bike Share for demoing their bikes and pumping everybody up for the East Bay launch; and everyone who donated to our raffle, especially our grand prize donors: City CarShare and PUBLIC Bikes + Gear.
We saved the best for last! Special thanks to all our wonderful volunteers, this wouldn't have been possible without you!!
Psyche! Even though fresh asphalt is still curing from the latest repaving, the City is thinking twice about WOBO's proposal last fall about making Grand Avenue a safer, calmer and better thoroughfare for people who walk, bike, shop, dine and commute.
Oakland and Piedmont are ready to consider reducing Grand Avenue in the Grand Lake District from 4 lanes to 3 lanes with bike lanes and improved pedestrian crossings, but only if the commercial neighborhood agrees. That's where YOU come in. We need your help talking to residents and local businesses to gain their support. We have a lot of work to do--let's get started!
Come and join the campaign at our Campaign Kickoff Meeting at TheGrand Tavern 3601 Grand Ave, Tuesday June 9th, 6 to 7:30 PM
If you can't make it on the 9th, do sign up here to get alerts about the campaign.
This issue is also going before the June 18th Bicyclist and Pedestrian Advisory Commission, 6pm at City Hall. The more voices we have at this meeting in support of the redesign the better!
As you may know, Mayor Schaaf has proposed a new Department of Transportation (DOT) with her first City Budget as Mayor. We are strongly in support of this move as it is a smart, sustainable step towards a safer and more livable Oakland. Currently, road projects are the responsibility of multiple city departments and project managers with less than ideal levels of coordination between these agencies. We believe this organizational fix will make better use of existing resources - streamlining the current patchwork system - and could help lead to planning, design, and delivery of more thoughtful transportation projects that meet the needs of Oaklanders of all ages and abilities and from all parts of Oakland, and encourage more of our community to walk and bike as our daily routine and for fun.
BUT YOU MUST ACT NOW: It's important to show your support in writing before the proposal goes into deliberation next week. Sign and share our online petition by Friday May 29th with your friends, family, and neighbors to help us show City Hall this is a great idea to help further move Oakland's streets and infrastructure forward! You'll find our formal letter of support here.
On the regular second Saturday schedule, the 6/13 OUP walk will bring you through secret stairs between MacArthur and 580 in the Laurel District, then off towards Oakland's famous redwoods and hills rich with stories of rock crushers, mines, casting ponds, and observatories. This walk is led by local historian, Denis Evanosky. Walk starts at 10am.
But back up to May, if you plan to be at the May 30 Love Our Neighborhood Day in North Oakland, a guided local history walk around Oakland's "Golden Gate District" will start at San Pablo Ave and 59th, at 12pm.
