Dogs dig dirt. But we need to dig it first.

Hi Cairn Friend,

Soon it will be time to put in the dens for the earthdog test that will follow Stumptown! Many hands make light work, so we hope to see members at the den placement on June 14.

New to earthdog? Here is a sampling of things that we'll need to do so that the club can host the earthdog test:

  • Get the tunnels out of storage.
  • Transport the tunnels to the den areas.
  • Clean up and fine-tune the trenches that Tom will dig with a backhoe in order to make them ready to receive the wooden den liners. We'll make the bottom of the trenches flat, make sure the trenches are wide enough and long enough, and test-place the wooden den pieces to make sure that all the pieces fit in the intended layout of the dens.
  • When everything looks good, we'll place the liners in the ground and fill around them with dirt, and very lightly cover them with more dirt.
  • Lather, rinse, and repeat until we've done the master/senior den, the junior den, and the intro den.
  • In the master/senior den area, we may trim a few tree branches or snip any brambles or blackberries that might be trip or scratch hazards. You may want gloves if there's much of that to do!
We welcome folks to contribute in whatever way makes sense for you. You won't need to know the rulebook to carry a den liner or move a little dirt. If you're not keen on shoveling or lifting den liners  it's often helpful to have someone gather loose grass or leaves or sticks to use as den cover, clear walking paths, move rocks out of the way, tighten loose screws, run back and forth for supplies, and so on.

Whatever it takes to prepare the grounds so that our guests have a safe and enjoyable time at our test.

While Tom has some of the equipment needed, it's always a good idea to bring along a shovel if you have one you like, a pair of gloves, and clothing you don't mind getting dirty. It's Oregon so you'll have to make your own call regarding sunscreen, hat, galoshes, snorkel, etc.

The dens must go in, rain or shine. Thank you for helping.
