You have wearied the Lord with your words. (v. 17)

It is usually we who get weary. As you may recall, Jesus says to us, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). But here Malachi says that the people have wearied God! As we often see in this book, the truth of what God says is questioned: “How have we wearied him?” It is not enough for God to speak; once again the people reject God’s statement and start arguing.

So, the prophet explained how the people had wearied God. What it comes down to is that the people were questioning God’s justice. In other words, “Why do the evil prosper and the good suffer?” they asked. To them, it just didn’t seem fair. “Why do they have money and I’m just barely scraping by?”

A great answer to that question is found in Romans 8:28: “All things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” And we also know that in the end, God will come again and make all things right. Judgment will come. Till then, it is not for us to question God’s ways. To do so, as Martin Luther once wrote, is to say, “Thou, Lord, hast sinned.”
