             NEWSLETTER & SCHEDULE
June 8th, 2015
Dear Friends:

An exciting week ahead at Mezzrow and at Smalls.  This week at Mezzrow I have an entire week of legendary musicians starting with Geoffrey Keezer who is coming in on Monday with the wonderful trumpetist Ingrid Jensen and on Tuesday with vocalist Gillian Margot.  You don't hear Geoffrey very often in this intimate kind of setting and you should try to make it down if you can to hear him.  On Wednesday and Thursday we feature the pianist Sullivan Fortner who's been making waves in jazz circles with his highly personal style.  He'll be playing duet with a very "special guest" who's name I am not allowed to publish due to contractual constraints, so I leave it to you to infer whom.  Needless to say it's going to be amazing and well worth coming out for.   On the weekend is an amazing booking - Richie Beirach and David Leibman performing duets.  I can't think of the last time this has happened in New York and it's surely going to be a rare experience in Mezzrow's intimate music room.  Make some reservations for this one.

I wanted to mention that I had a really nice gig this afternoon with bassist Steve LaSpina and guitarist Ron Afif.  We played at Cafe Loup (on 13th street near 6th ave).  Steve has been holding down this Sunday jazz brunch gig for years having inherited it from Bob Kindred.  Cafe Loup is a hidden treasure - some of the last "real" New York spot for real New Yorkers.  So much of the vibe there is what I always remember about the sophisticated bar scene of New York and what I wanted to create at Mezzrow.  Mahogany bar, eclectic artwork and photography on the walls and a real New York cliental - interesting and sophisticated people who enjoy jazz.  If you're looking for a great jazz brunch don't overlook this hidden garden of real jazz feeling and great food.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the clubs.

Regards,

Spike

NOW: A cover paid at Mezzrow also gets you admission to Smalls.

Friday & Saturday- 6/12-13
David Liebman & Richie Beirach

Dave Liebman and Richie Beirach have carved out a place in jazz history through their collaborations in several distinct settings: duo, the iconic fusion group of the ‘70s, “Lookout Farm” followed in the ‘80s with the critically acclaimed quartet “Quest.” Their musical telepathy is documented on several dozen recordings and years of performing together. Beginning with their mutual apprenticeships (most notably Lieb with Elvin Jones/ Miles Davis; Richie with Stan Getz/Chet Baker) along with their leadership of the musician’s collective “Free Life Communication” in the early ‘70s that grew out of the New York City loft scene, their history is part of jazz folklore. Their influence as teachers, authors, composers and performers is acknowledged worldwide. This is especially heard in the harmonic realm where they developed a way of playing that reflected developments in 20th century classical composition alongside a unique approach towards playing the jazz standard repertoire. Most of all, their music, as sophisticated as it may be, is always heartfelt and passionate.
