Memorial Day Last weekend’s Memorial Day parade was one of the best yet. Yesterday was the City’s Memorial Day ceremony at the Newton cemetery. In his remarks, Board of Aldermen President Scott Lennon made special reference to Tom Mountain’s moving column in last week’s Tab, in which he offered brief descriptions of the 23 young men who lost their lives in Vietnam.  Austin Street Hearing June 2, June 9 The developer chosen for the Austin Street project has filed their project with the City. Their submission is posted here. The project will be presented to the Land Use Committee on June 2 and 9 at City Hall at 7PM. June 2 will begin with a presentation by the developer, followed by questions from the Aldermen and then public comment period. The June 9 meeting will begin with a presentation by the Newtonville Area Council followed by public comment. The public may also submit written comments to Land Use Clerk Linda Finucane, who will distribute them to the aldermen/women, her email is lfinucane@newtonma.gov. The public hearing (and therefore the opportunity for future public comment) will be kept open until the Committee is ready for its final vote on the project, which Land Use Chair Marc Laredo said in a memo that he anticipates will be “sometime in the late fall.” Fundraiser June 14, 2-4pm 2015 is an election year, all the aldermen/women are up for re-election. I have worked hard over the last eighteen months to represent you and hope to be able to continue to do so. The Newton TAB reported last week that there will be competition for my seat, so I will need resources to be able to campaign effectively. Thank you! Cabot School The Cabot School Building Committee met last Thursday to vote on whether to move ahead with a rebuild for the new Cabot Elementary School or an addition/renovation. The vote was 8-5 in favor of addition/renovation, and I voted with the majority. The school will offer 24 regular education classrooms, two self-contained special education classrooms, space for the afterschool program, and spaces for music, a media center, a cafeteria, and a kitchen. There will also be a parking lot on site and a safer walk from the school to the park. Meeting minutes and presentations can be seen here. There will be many more meetings and opportunities for public input in the months ahead. Budget Last week the Board of Aldermen voted on the Mayor’s proposed budget of $362M. I was one of two alderpersons to vote against the budget, and I did so out of concern that we are not doing enough to address our unfunded liabilities which total over $800 million. Here are the remarks I presented during last week’s budget discussion. Also here is the report that Alderwoman Ruthanne Fuller worked with a group of experts to produce over a year ago on the problem. Subway  Finally!
